Water Pressure

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

I would hope theres more than 6lbs at WOT. That doesnt sound healthy but not bad at idle. I would think 15 or better at running speed. Mine doesnt have a gauge for water pressure so I cant say exactly.

as the others have said if that is at WOT that's not enough
generally its best to have at least 12-15 at WOT

at idle some Mercs can show as little as 1.5 - 3 and still be OK

I think the big question here is how old is your water pump?
I replace mine every spring
if yours is much older than that its time to replace it

OOOPS,

Let me clarify, I was at idle on the 5lb reading so from what I'm reading I should be okay as long as it goes up 12-15lbs at WOT....The boat is over at Custom getting all the dock wounds repaired. After I get it back it is going to Upholstery for new seat covers. It may be three weeks before I actually get to the lake, but the next time on the water I will check it out at WOT. The previous owner said he put a new water pump in this last spring so hopefully It will be okay?

Thanks for the information fellows,

I wouldn't just hope that it's enough. I would know before I took it out again. Your water pressure is the single most important thing to keep up with. Not enough water pressure & you won't be going for very long.

If you don't want to take my word for it ask Wrenchin2. I'm sure James would tell you the same.

Clarification, I talk in circles sometimes, I do take this seriously or I would not have posted the question. I would never run it on hope if the pressure is low as that would be stupidity in the max. I meant to say.....

I will check it out next time on the water. My plan is once I clear the HB idle buoys to increase my RPMS while keeping an eye on the water pressure gauge. If the water pressure doesn't increase with RPMs or is much lower than the normal water pressure at WOT, then I will idle back and calll James. I'm still hopeful that it is okay, that nothing is wrong with the pressure, but if it is then It will repaired.

David,
You got a new one???????

The water pressure is different from a 2L, 2.4, and 2.5L from a 3L.

The 3L specs are 1.5-4.5 at idle and 8-10 PSI minimum at WOT. The engine you had up here was a 3L best I can remember.

James, I do have a new one. I sold the 1996 150 XR6 and I replaced it with a 1999 200 EFI Mercury. What should the water pressure be James?

Thanks,

Thanks James for the link to the WP manual specs. I know that It is good at idle with thermostat open . I will need to check the WP at WOT once i have it back from finish and upholstery work.

Mine runs 3000 PSI at idle and 3500 PSI at WOT, But then again I have a real motor (Perry built Johnson) It takes that much pressure to keep the atoms from fusing togather. emoTongue

Now I know what went by me in a blur the other day. That has to be atoms splitting off of your prop? It almost made me want to have Wrenchin make me up one of those atom splitting machines, but the pocket book isn't as thick as it would require so I'll stick to what I have. A Fish & Ski boat just wouldn't look right at 90 mph anyway.
