I have an older 96 Mercury 150 XR6 and I'm concerned about the water pump. The motor runs well but I don't notice a lot of water being push out by the water pump on the back of the engine like I've noticed on some other engines. Is there someway to test the water pump without taking it in somewhere?

Thanks in advance for any help

Mercury wants them to be replaced every year.

Do NOT compare the pee stream of your engine to the pee stream of a Johnson/Evinrude. They have a lot higher volume water pump and pee when cold. They pee VERY hard. Your engine does not pee until it reaches 143*. You may also have a dirt dobbers nest in the hole. Hope this answers your question.

Oh No!

Not the feared Dirt Dobber... that is a good point. It has been garaged all her life except for three weeks when I purchased her and left it at a Dealer to be serviced but they didn't get to it and I picked it up after the 3 weeks of promises.

This spring and summer, I'm going to be leaving it down at Guntersville Lake some, under a large open storage building for boats and campers so I may need to put an engine cover on the cal. Thanks for pointing this out cause I could see where the little creature could do some damage

If the pee tube gets stopped up, It just won't indicate it is moving water. This is where you need to learn your water pressure gauge if equipped. It will not hurt it if it is not peeing if it has water pressure on the gauge. Most of the time it is not peeing anyway until it gets warm.

I went by Wrechin's and before long he had me all fixed up. He replaced the waterpump and even fixed my speedometer. He even explained things while he was operating. Extremely nice guy and knows what he is doing. Thanks James!
