what is the avarage price for get your water pump replaced on a mercury outboard? i told my cousin me and him could do it but he's the type person that would rather have a professional do it thanks its a 1990 mercury 40hp classic oil injected

The best thing to do is buy a manual on your motor then you can do just about anything you want to by yourself, I haven't had a water pump replaced by anyone but myself in years and couldn't give you a price but if you do it yourself it won't cost much, buy the part off the internet or on ebay or buy the part from your motor dealer, take the serial number of your motor and he will look up the right part.

I have seen any where from 2 to 2 1/2 hrs labor charged For doing a water pump and that was just a wear plate and impeller. so at 65 to85 bucks an hour you can do the numbers.

My labor book shows 1.5 for fresh water and 2.0 for salt. They are not that hard. I have a kit in my hand that has all the gaskets, wear plate, "o" rings and impeller. List is $20.50. The 40 is tricky in looking up parts for that year. They were transitioning models. Would need serial to verify part. Just to give you a ideal of cost. Later! Hope this helps! Also can supply (print you out instructions) you with information on replacing it if you want to tackle it yourselves.

I would not pay someone, this is so easy anyone can do it. Probably seven bolts lower the lower end. The hard part is getting the shift link to line up when putting the lower end back on. Done it twice alone and one with help. Should not take 30 minutes, max 1 hour. If you could put you boat on a ramp so the lower end can drop straight down instead of having to tilt the motor to get the end off it can make it that much easier.

I agree with Tyler. I woun't pay for a water pump. They are too simple. When people do pay me to do them, I have them watch so they can do it theirself. Like I said, I will give you the information needed to change the waterpump. Save ir or throw it away. The inline mercs, due to thier shifting mechanisms, are a little tricky. But still not hard. Later.
