Well, despite my best efforts Flyman Clay and I had a good morning fishing in the Gorge today (Tue Jul 3). I started the morning by realizing that my accident with my trailer electrical connection did have a consequence, I had no running lights at 5:45 in the morning.
A few days ago I noticed that my wiring connector was hanging a little low, so I gave it a wrap around the trailer post. Apparently, it didn’t have enough slack to handle my trailer jack-knifing technique and pulled out, dragging on the road for about ten miles. I tested the blinkers and the brakes and everything worked fine. I didn’t check the running lights. I ran the flashers on dark streets, which kept people from hitting my boat, but also functioned as a redneck in truck ahead indicator.
I also split my big toenail kicking a wheel chuck from my trailer. Probably shouldn’t do that with pieces of railroad ties.
When I got to the boat ramp (Suck Creek is my favorite boat ramp, not really), I discovered that I had lost my gas cap due to setting it on the transom and driving to the boat ramp. If anyone finds it I’ll give you a $5 reward.
I had forgotten how steep the ramp is there and so when I launched the boat, I didn’t have the bowline in my hand and the boat immediately drifted right out of reach. Someone was going to need to swim and FlymanClay volunteered, but it was my fault, so in I went. Not too bad actually, as the water felt pretty nice.
We hit a shoreline (figuratively speaking) and I tried out my new BassPro version of the WhopperPlopper and man alive it worked! I caught three shorts and then a keeper which I’m going to call at 4#, you decide.
Clay caught some shorts and a keeper as well as a catfish. We worked the bank after 9 to no avail with Chatterbaits and a Texas-rigged craw (as well as FlymanClay’s flyrod). Then we saw a brick of foam dancing around in the water. After chasing it awhile with my trolling motor, Clay snagged it. It was a catfish rig of some kind, detached from its moorings and free to bob down the river. We let the catfish go, but if it’s your catfish rig, let me know. I’ll trade it for a gas cap.
I tried out my new BassPro marker buoys to catch some deep water bass. I found fish on some underwater structure and marked two spots. We hit the first spot with a spoon, Carolina Rigged craw and a big green football jig I got from Soddy tackle (lost it). No bites. When I went to try the other marker it was gone. Trolling back to find it, I spotted it under the water about 3’ down. FlymanClay snagged it. It was half full of water. Good excuse to go back by BassPro.
I ended up catching two more keepers at two creekmouths with a Chatterbait. Thanks to Dr. Detroit for turning me into both Chatterbaits and WhopperPloppers.
I was super hungry after we got it. One bit of advice for everyone. If you think you can pull your boat through the St Elmo Taco Bell Drive through, don’t! Not unless you want to greatly amuse the Taco Bell drive through lady.
That’s it, 6:30 to 12:30 in the Gorge. Thanks for reading!
