Went fishing with a guy I work with early this morning. Put in at Hornsby at 5:30 a.m. and fished around there til day light. Buddy had a slick get off in the first couple of casts. We rounded the bend there and I'm fishing a red shad T-Rig worm...felt a thump and a fish start swimming down. I set the hook into what I am thinking is going to be a slick or a 1 pound fish and almost immediately the rod bends double and a fish goes airborne and then starts fighting like crazy. My buddy and I say it about the same time "Good Fish...". Boated it and it was a Smallie that was around 2 1/2 pound. Decent fish to start the day. Moved around a bit this morning. Seemed to get on a pattern that dealt with extremely shallow fish and rocks. Find a shallow area with lots of visible rock on the shoreline and in the water and you've found fish that you can see in the water.
Now we didn't catch any keepers doing this but my gosh at the variety of fish. We were fishing crankbaits in the rocks and catching drum like they were bass. We caught atleast 4 drums a piece over 2 pounds. Caught a few more slick Largemouths and some good sunfish too. My buddy caught the biggest bluegill I've ever seen in my life. It was big as a good keeper crappie and he caught it early on a topwater Pop-R. I caught a 4-5 pound catfish that freight trained my crankbait. Watched one fella boat a couple fish that was evidently fishing a hump or something. BUT the deal was....fished from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and caught fish good up til around 9 o clock then it just stopped. My buddy broke a nice one off at the very last by flipping under a dock. It made one hard dive down and broke his line. Not much for a bass report I don't guess but I'm happy just catching fish. Caught 95% of our fish on crankbaits with orange and green on them. Whether it be fire tiger or whatever else. The good smallie was on a t-rig worm.
