On Sunday I'm headed to the upper end of Watts Bar Lake with some friends who have a pontoon boat. We'll be heading out of Caney Creek Marine around River Mile 562.5.

Of course I plan to take a couple of catfish rods... but I am clueless about that end of Watts Bar.

It's mainly a "hang out on the water" excursion but I MUST put a line in the water. Can anyone point me toward any good catfish holes on the river channel up that way?

Specific landmarks and/or Mile Markers would be helpful because I'm not sure my friends have a depth finder on their boat.

PM's are fine if you don't want to "tell the world." emoBigsmile

emoThanks in advance!

There is a submerged Island in the main river just above the entrance to Caney Creek it comes up to 20 ft or so out of the channel it might be a good place to start with some bait for cats.

That island will be hard to find without a depth finder, it is a nice hump though. The mouth of Caney creek is a good place for fish, the right side going out is a small rock point that is straight off on the creek side and slowly descending on the other. It is a long point toward the main channel and always holds fish. The other side of the creek is rather rocky but deep all the way to the bank. Good for bass, I have never caught any cats there. Caney Creek itself has a lot of good areas, just hang out and explore a little. I might mention looking at the areas around the small day markers, they might show you where the shallow points meet deeper water.......(hint) (hint)emoGrouphug

Richard, I have a portable depthfinder that runs off of one of those super D batteries you are welcome to use. I used it on my buddies small boat. I work downtown and live in cleveland but could meet you this week. It was good on delpth.

That's very kind! But really not worth the trouble.

This is not going to be a serious fishing excursion at all. Just hanging out with friends for a little "party on the water" time. I just figured if anybody can tell me a spot to party that just MIGHT happen to harbor a catfish, all the better.

And they may have a depth finder... I just won't know until I get there.

Might also try the first bend above caney near the cliff face on your right..

10-4... someone else mentioned that. Sounds like a likely candidate. Thanks to everyone!

Sniperchoke & Carl stole my thunder, but that's where I would head first. If there are any rockfish left in WB they love that hump this time of year and later.

Second choice would be the bluff on the right heading upstream three miles or so as the river bends back to the left.
