Headed to the family tract this weekend in Putnam Co. TN. The main objective was to scout and plant plots. Sunday morning I climbed up into my lock-on down in the field well before sunrise. About 20 minutes into legal shooting light, I hear the sounds of hooves on the ground but didn't see anything in the over grown field. Seconds later a small deer trots into view and bow-range. By the time I picked up my bow there were two large deer chasing this smaller deer very aggressively!? One of the big does and the small one ran out of the field leaving the third big doe. I had to think quick because she was about to leave. I laid the smack on her at about 30 yards and she crashed her way out of the field. I stayed in the stand for about 30 minutes and got to watch another doe feed in the field before moving on. I lowered my bow and began heading down when I noticed another big doe standing about 15 yards away. I just waived at her as she casually strolled out the field. I got down and was moving along a logging road that just in the woods, suddenly I look up and hear comes the big doe chasing the smaller one straight at me. I knocked another arrow and before I could draw that deer was in my face about to run over me! That deer locked 'em up soo hard that she actiually threw dirt and leaves on me! Of course they busted and took off blowing as they went. So Me2 deer0. Planted the fields in a mix of winter wheat and oats, now for the rain dance! The dark moon seemed to have the deer moving in the mornings and none in the evening where I was. There are no acorns and the deer are staying in the lower elevations around pastures and water. Question: why would two adult does be aggressively chasing a smaller one in early October? Soory for the long post, but I had to Share.

OK, so I am slow....the deer you shot tried to get even with you and while chasing another deer, after you saw a third deer, and you almost got run over by it, but didnt get to shoot at it again, and you didnt put it in the freezer?????? Did I miss any thing?

Sorry if thats confusing! 3 deer in the field. 2 big ones chase small one. Big one chases little one away, leaving 1 big doe. Doe gets Shot. While recovering the DEAD deer, the previous two chase their way to my feet before spooking. DEAD deer meets my processor, Churly smiles!

I saw a total of 5 deer from the stand. The three chasing then two other single does. Then got down and about got ran over.

I was trying to keep the story down to 10 pages. I appologize if its a tough read. After re-reading, I realize I concentrated on telling the chasing story, when i should have finished up the recovery end of the story. So why were two big does chasing a smaller one away?

Was she in early estrous?
Was she really a big button buck?
Was one of the chasers a broken horn buck?
Did she get caught in the thicket with the big one's boy friend?

This is only my 11th season, I have only harvested 64 deer. I know some of you veterans have much more "stand time" than I, and was wondering if any you had an explanation for 2 does chasing another doe aggresively at this time of the year!!!? I know big does chase their young-of-the-year button bucks away before breeding but I am almost sure that smaller deer was a doe. It got within inches of me. Wild but fun!

BTW I am 99% sure that the chasee was

I love turkey hunting and I agree with you!

Could you go over that another time?  I lost the story somewhere in the second explanation.

Did the little doe being harassed lead the second bully doe back to you for you to take it out as well?.  Did you let the little doe down?

Yep, I guess thats what was going on!?

Churly , either the big does were running off a button buck or the available food source has the does in fierce
competition with each other .

Good! In another week or two that lock on will be surrounded by neon green wheat and oats!
