It rained all the way to the lake and stopped just as daylight broke. Day was mostly cloudy and boat was mostly soaked. My son and I started with a buzzbait and he caught 2 nice spots pretty quickly. I didn't fish for a while as I was paralelling the bank and it made for easier casting for him. He threw the buzzbait for a couple hours with only 3-4 more to show for the 5000 casts. After this we moved to the docks and were looking for shad. It seemed that when the sun would shine for a few minutes, the shad would get active and we would catch a few. The bites came in bursts as the sun came and went from the clouds. I mostly pitched jigs and threw cranks while he stayed with the spinnerbait the rest of the day. I only caught a few small fish on a crank but I did have one about 4-5# follow a rattle trap all the way to the boat without touching it. Any decent fish came on the spinnerbait. Best 5 went around 10#. The fishing will improve as the days and nights cool. The shad were not in the backs of creeks and I believe the best bite would be sticking with main lake points right now. We fished till 3pm and came home to a wonderful roast and all the trimmings.
P.S. To anyone that might know "Buddy" that has ran the fall/winter sunday dogfights for the last several years, He will not be having them any longer due to sickness. He is a very nice guy and truely enjoyed every sack of fish he weighed-in for everyone. A true gentleman and fisherman. I wish him a speedy recovery and nothing but tight lines and heavy sacks.
