Well folks, my dad and I headed down to Weiss this weekend with my club, North Alabama Tournament Anglers for our fall Weiss Lake tourney. I have never been on this lake before, but studied the map hard, and got some great advice from Pointer78. Thanks man!
First off... Coosa River Spotted Bass are an amazing species of fish!!! What fighters they are!
I started my day Friday by fishing a roadbed that ran near Weiss Powerhouse... i began throwing a mix of trick worms, brush hogs, Netbait finesse worms, and crankbaits. The Netbait Key Lime Pie Finesse worm texas rigged with a 1/4 oz weight was the ticket there, and held strong all weekend. I pulled some keepers off the roadbed, and off riprap on the Weiss levie. I later moved onto a series of long points near Highway 411 and boated several more keepers... between my dad and I we probably boated around 10 keepers and 10 nonkeepers... needless to say, never being on the lake we felt good about our chances. My practice weight was around 10 lbs, which included my first Coosa River Spot which I have posted a pic of... also a pic of my dad's first Coosa... a little smaller though
I was third in blast off, and we initially ran back to the roadbed. Then disaster struck, my trolling motor quit working... all connections were fine, it just wasn't getting power for some reason, I had also charged it the night before. I was puzzled and angry, and with stiff winds could not stay on the roadbed. I had to adjust. We ran down to some riprap I had found on practice day that was sheltered from the wind, within minutes I had put two keeper Coosa's in the boat... We ran the rip rap all morning with finesse worms and I boated a ton of 11 inch fish, couldn't get a bigger fish. I headed off to the point I had done well on, and did my best to hold, but it was impossible for me, i should of had an anchor with me... oh well, hind sight is 20/20.
We headed to more riprap that was slightly sheltered from the wind near Weiss Dam (not the powerhouse) and I boated a fat 3.5 lb largemouth on what else, Key Lime Finesse worm.... I also wore out the short largemouths and coosa's in that area too... but couldn't stay on it as long as I would of liked without the TM.
My three keepers gave me somewhere around 6.6 lbs, which was good enough for 7th out of 25 or so. I'll take that being trolling motorless... it took 9.5 lbs to win, and I feel confident that I could of really competed for first if my fortune would of been better.
Regardless I had a blast hanging out with my dad for the weekend, and I really look forward to carrying him along with me again on future tournaments... He keeps me sane!
