I got a chance to go to Weiss Friday and wade for crappie. One of my fav. techniques. I love the one on one that this presents. I was willing but the crappie were not. The water temp and the lake level were both low for what I had in mind. emoBang So I had to regroup and change the strategy.emoScratch By lunch there were only six keepers in the basket. So back to the creek channel is the only solution. Hoping to find them in more of a prespawn staging position near the deeper water instead of in the flats and preparing to spawn. Never found the mother load but did pick up a few large females and some males the rest of the afternoon. Fished until 6:00 p.m. Est. The hardest day I've had on weiss in years for a great spring weather day. Don't know if the fast moving front the day before changed the mood of the fish or maybe the blue bird skies. Finished with 29 keepers but it was not easy. emoWorthy God Bless

Great report biofisher. I am holding out for a couple more weeks before I try it down there. The fishing is usually pretty good this time of year but I think the front has done its damage. The high winds sure didn't help.

Great info Biofisher! Good move too. When in doubt, go to the channel. That's where most of my best crappies are taken, structure or cover right next to the channel is my most consistent crappie spot. I haven't hit them shallow in more than ten years. That's usually the time of year when I have a ton of spring cleaning and other big jobs at the house going. Do you think that the crappies are shallow when the dogwoods and redbuds are blooming? That what I have heard and I think that the water temp in the low 60's correlates with the soil temp that triggers the bloom.

The fishing on Weiss will get better as the water temp and the water level both come up. Most of the fish are now in 6ft.-4ft. of water and would like to come in shallower but they need at least another 12- 18 inches of water. I know that doesn't sound like much but on Weiss that would put water on most of the spawning flats. With the water color found there, the temp would blow up over night. So if they get any rain or Alabama power decides to raise the level of the lake it should get hot fast. Pack your bags and be on ready if you are planning a trip. All of the fish were caught on a jig, which is all I ever use to get my wade on. God Bless
