When Clinton was running for president, he spoke of getting life longers off of welfare/housing. He stated that family generations have abused the welfare system and were not motivated to get off of the welfare system. He talked about how welfare was to help people until they could get back on their feet and not to make it a way of life. His objective was to start motivation by giving a time limit on housing and using the money saved to possibly offer job training.

To me, and I don't know why it wouldn't be for everyone, this seemed to be a great idea.

Was anything ever implemented?

Yes Clinton finally signed wellfare reform as a lame duck after the Republican controlled congress put it on his desk a third time.

Yep....we use to have 3 strikes and your gone too. What happened to that?

Did "W" get them off welfare and out of government housing when he took over?

Print this out and keep it for ever. As long as there is a democrat in the White House or a Dem majority in the rest of the gvt, you will NEVER see anything done to welfare and housing for these people during those reins. Where do you think all the votes came from for Olbumer?

Spur, if Clinton signed the bill before he left office, why didn't Bush clean the welfare rolls, he had 8 years to do it but now it is a democrats job huh? That's a bit like the pot calling the kettle black, the republicans didn't do anything about it then but they can sure whine and gripe about what Obama is doing. How do you justify your answer?

Well you can't really say that Bush had 8 years and did nothing about it. Clinton waited until right before he left office to sign off on it. He also had 8 years to do something about it.

If Clinton signed off on the bill right before he left office, it would have been a true bill and went into effect then, now Bush comes along and has 8 years to do whatever and he didn't enforce the law.

So basically, everyone (Demo and Repub) is pussy footing around it and not inforcing it? Seems like the responsibility might be passed along to the state level? Is it the states faught for not inforcing.

This is a slap in the face to anyone who works and pays taxes- when the system is abbused. I am sure that there are good hard working people who have lost there jobs and houses that will never get to benifit from housing due to the free loading abuse now.

The IRS has no problem cracking down on working people, to the point that they loose their homes, bank accounts, etc.. Why not have someone crack down on the free loading non-working people.

Hurrican Katrina...a fine example. Those folks down there have lived their lives DEPENDANT on the Gov't welfare system. I know that MANY blamed President Bush for the fieasco....but come on. That should have been started at the LOCAL LEVEL GOVT.....on the evactuations. Then the state. Where was the MAYOR? He was GONE to higher ground. Now I don't claim to be the sharpest knife in the drawer....but by whatever means...I would have gotten my family to safety. I have a question. Where are you going to PLUG your newly LOOTED...Big Screen in....when there is NO POWER!

Hey Eric...I see the GLOBETROTTERS are coming to Chattanooga. Is that President Obama or that basketball team? LMAO!

You know, I don't have a problem helping out the folks that are really in need of help, but I sure hate helping the dead beats that live of the government and refuse to work or better them selves. Yes, I believe it sould start at a state level, not at a federal level.

It should start by people taking on responsibility to have children only if and when they can provide for them and people taking marriage as a lifelong commitment. Our Government needs to get serious to make all able bodied welfare recipients do some sort of work. Remember talk around that? But that is unlikely to fly, lest we infringe on their “rights”. My “rights” tax the heck out of me and I’m happy to pay them when they are used judiciously and not for generation after generation that learn from their deadbeat parents that welfare is a lifestyle and not a form of temporary support.

Let's bring this Welfare thing a little closer to home, 52% of the State of Tennessee in 2008 went to TennCare! People {in Ga. NC. Ky. Ms. Ark and WVa. to name a few areas}, will tell you once your on the TennCare list your basically there for life! They get own, move to another state but still use the TennCare! Just commute and keep a Tn. address somewhere! There isn't a lot of history checks! If I get sick, I go to my family doctor. Once your on TennCare you just go to the emergency room! Free! Free public housing through welfare nothing new. Grandma and Grandpa, was on it, Mom and Dad {whomever he is} was on it, and now "we's teenage parents and we's on it"! It's just become a learned way of life! What started out as a helping hand has developed into a new culture.

I think the Clinton bill was fillabustered into oblivion, on the re-run bill to make a few adjustments, untill the Dems got hold of the Houses again and then it went down the tubes forever.
Once a bill is signed, does not make it law, all laws can and do get changed by other laws. Also it can be overidden by a majority vote and I think that is what happened when the Dems got control of the Houses.
It silently dissapeared, thanks to the liberal press.
