What can Humminbird Switchfire 2D Sonar do...

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

Factory Default Sensitivity is 10 I never run above 11 when fishing 60-80+ foot deep even. ALot of times I lower to show less clutter on the screen like air bubbles, algae, plankton etc. I only want to see the fish and bait.

Do you have to change sensitivity or any other settings to be able to see that on the 998?

You shouldn't have to change much on the 998. Maybe taking the Fish ID feature (in your sonar menu) OFF. If I remember right it comes on from the factory. Most of the 700 and above units work pretty well on Auto mode. There are options that improve your sight fishing capabilities but I doubt you'll have to mess with them, just to see your bait like Erhler was doing on the video.

You should check out our seminar on March 30th in Dalton. The seminar is all about sonar/side imaging, we have a 4 part presentation that is all you need to know get the most out of your unit. 7pm March 30th at Pro Lures in Dalton, it's just $15 and includes food and some free gear. Thanks Louie-I would love to come to that but I live in Crossville and can't see to drive much at night. If I can ever find a program like this during the day I will be sure to attend.

I always keep my settings at 10, but I usually fish in 20-30 fow-I only fish for walleye. I will try turning my fish ID off though-I usually leave it on due to the tracking feature that goes with it.

Thanks for the help!

Doug, I'm fishing Rock Island (Caney Fork river, Center Hill) for walleye right now. Very seldom over 25 feet deep. Would I be better off lowering my sensitivity a little in rocky areas like that? I usually leave the 3 settings like you showed earlier-10-10-off/med.

IF you are getting over powering data that is not helpful...adjust it down a little. Not seeing what you want adjust it up. Sensitivity is like a contrast control use it to display the data you want and need. When I'm vertical fishing I adjsut it to see what I need for that day...most of the time I'm right back at Factory Default of 10. But I try to get the best data I can...do you need too...prbably not but I always want to get the most out of my electronics. If you want a set it and forget it 10 would be my happy medium but if you adjust it up and down a little you will see the differences immediately on the screen. Just hit the 4 Ways Cursor and watch the effects - thats the best way to learn. It will help you get more when you learn the effects of sensitivity adjustment. Just like photographers that learn to change the appeture settings, F-stop and all that with a camera...they can make beautiful images all the time because they understand what they need to change for the different conditions. Same thing goes with sonar the more you learn and the effects the more skilled you will be with fishing electronics.

Thanks Doug. I'm going tomorrow-will play with it a little. I will also try to post a fishing report. Not many are interested in walleye at Rock Island, but there may be a few that are.
