This is what a country boy does when he hits the stores looking for a redish colored lipless crankbait. Went to several stores this weekend, including Sportsman's Warehouse in Chattanooga, looking for red lipless cranks. Everybody was sold out of them...that daggum red color spring craze :) Well my growing on me favorite lipless crank is the Redeye Shad. They don't make it in the color I'm looking for. But they did have a plain pearl one. So I got it and decided to play today.

Here's the drying result. Not the best in the world but not bad for my first attempt at airbrushing. I couldn't get the tape good enough around the eyes and didn't want to paint over it but we'll see if it catches fish first then if it does, I'll get more complex with it. I figure with all this effort into painting and waiting that it will get hung in a stump it's first cast. LOL.

looks really good to me let me know how it works if it works good i might just pay you to make me some!emoThumbsup emoThumbsup emoToast

Hey Daniel ... shoot CFF member Tr19 a PM if you'd wanna learn more about airbrushing cranks. He's a real Picasso with those things and I'm sure he'd be happy to offer up some tutorials.

Nice work BTW ... homebrewing is as good as it gets. After just one fish on that bait you'll have every one you own stipped down, taped, and ready for a good homemade paint job! emoThumbsup

I hear you Daniel TN, I broke out the airbrush and started playing again a few weeks ago. I couldn't find a 3/4oz Spot in Texas Craw color I wanted so painted one up - also did a few in Royal Shad color but I left all of them in the boat and am too lazy to go get them for pics. Anyway, here is my weekend try at the famous Sexy Shad color, with a little modification of adding some red gills (Deep Little-Ns and Wiggle Warts were the "models"). I haven't done this in years but figured since I have literally pounds of crankbaits that need new paint or aren't used, might as well start modifying into colors I want to throw or will have some confidence in...

woah that is a good lookin bait. With some gold stripes on there you would have a sweet rayburn red. I like those strike kings too they look good in the water.

Yeah Buddy!!

Team-D -- That's some nice work on your plugs! My dad paints automotive stuff and he is a real Chip Foose at it. I just ain't got that kind of talent. I bought a cheap air brush and couldn't paint that well with it. We blamed it on it being cheap. So I bought a pretty good one and still couldn't paint well with it. LOL. We can't get the paint mixture right enough to go out of the nozzles. The newer one I have came with several nozzles for different applications. My dad got his smallest spray gun and it worked better than the air brush for applying this type of color. For the small detail stuff, an airbrush is going to be mandatory. I am gonna give TR-19 a shout. Maybe he can lead me in the way for the best paint type to use in an air brush. I may even get another brush if the one I have is deemed as junk. I have an Aztek 7778 in the metal version.

Here's my two after the clear coat dried. Just snapped this pic. The RedEye Shad would look really awesome if I wouldn't have buggered up the eyes getting the tape off.

Next time just put a little vaseline, or some type of petroleum based grease, on the eyes and when your finished painting wipe it away. Or you can buy the stuff that is made for painting windows.

Being a new member to the CFF, I figure this is as good a place as any to jump into the group. I have not heard of airbrushing lures. It is apparent I have a few things to learn. If you see a green and white Triton on Nickajack, it's me or my dad or both. Stop and say, Hey.

By the way FA, I won't use small words for you. I'll just point.

Here is the Rayburn Super Spot I did a while back, I'll post the Royal Shad when I get a shorter workday and have time to dig them out. Pics kind of suck, I need to do a better job of setting up for close-ups. Top is my old Jimmy Houston, wouldn't sell it for a hundred dollars. Bottom is my 3/4oz copy, could have used a little more orange on the belly but not bad. It was originally white with black back and painted over with translucent red and orange, so you can still see the "Super Spot" insiginia which I thought was pretty cool. The gold was done with a marker I bought in the crafts section at Wally World, I got a little sloppy and broke the tip of the marker out toward the front. Anyway, I'll shoot you a PM Daniel Tn. My theory is keep it simple with the paint and put a good coat of 2-ton on the top, that stuff is pretty bullet-proof.

Just noticed that the Jimmy Houston model on the top still has a little grass on it from Guntersville, brings a big fat smile to my face!
