Red hooks in the front of a crankbait or jerkbait simulates the color of gills in a fleeing fish or simulating blood in an injured fish. The only time I use red hooks is in one particular color of a lipless crankbait

I use red hooks on a lot of my 1/32 oz jigs this I crappie fish with. I also catch them on gold hooks too. I've caught them on bronze hooks. I think that they may catch fishermen more so than fish. I don't think that it really matters to the fish if the jig is properly presented. I could be wrong. I really like the design of the jig with the gold hook. The barb is smaller and doesn't tear up the panfish assassins nearly as bad as the red hook jigs do. I just wish that I could find jigs with the gold hook design made with red hooks.

I agree with what Pointer said. The idea is the flash of red indicates injury, or danger. Most fish are keyed to the color red when it flashes by.

I'll chime in with Steve. The only difference red hooks make is in your wallet. If you believe the adds that tell you they attract more predatory strikes then by all means try them. I have not seen any difference at all.

red hooks are just plated red instead of tin, gold or someother color. If the red is important to use just pait some cheaper ones up with nail polish.

Bronze hooks are made of different metal, and the bronze is the natural color of the metal.

As long as the hook is sharp and not too shiny, I don't care what color it is.

Last year while Crappie fishing I tied 2 jigs on at once. One with the red hook and one with a normal hook. Red hook 3' deep bronze 4' deep. I caught 3 more crappie on the red hook. I then retied, swapping the hooks depth and jig color. I caught 2 more crappie on the bronze hook.

I think jig color and depth are more important. How ever I still have the red hook jigs in my box, once I run out, I'll not pay the extra.

However, my brother-in-law and I are working on an idea for a red flashing light in softbaits. So far, the reuslts have impressed me. As we get this idea hashed out more, I'll be able to explain it better.

I have some of the cajun line that is red and they point out red is the 1st color to dissappear in water as it goes deeper. OK I'll accept that statement. But what are the red hooks about if at any depth past 6 or 7 feet the color fades into the surrounding water?
While visiting family in east Tx I thought I might as well do some research if I were to buy a place down there. To a man every bait and tackle shop said basically the same thing; A rattletrap/flatsided sinker in red. I now have 3 if I can find somebody with a boat down there. oh yeah it's lake fork! I bought the good waterproof maps and perhaps red is good due to the shallow nature of the fork and the red is still visible, ya got me!!

I agree, that past a certain depth, hook color doesn't matter, unless you are fishing gin clear water. The difference between red line and red hooks is this..............hooks are a solid item while line has transparency. Thus, red line vanishes underwater.

I only use red hooks, although I do have some nickel hooks in my box. I use the nickel color when I run low of the red ones.
