I thinks its much easier to learn when you see the effects of making the adjustments. If you understand what the adjusts do then it makes it easier to adjust them on the water. One really cool thing with Humminbird is by using an SD Card you can save sonar recordings that are only limited by the length you start/stop recording or the size of the SD Card. With todays 32GB cards you can could capture many, many hours of recordings. Not just a few minutes. THe Sonar Recordings will record all inputs 2D, DI, SI and GPS Data so when you playback on the unit you are using raw data just like when using the unit normally on the water, so you can learn how and see the effects from playing back the recordings.
