I just bought a Remington 770 .308cal and it came with a 3x9x40 scope. Im not sure what brand it is it just came on the gun but I dont think it is a very high end scope. This is my first large bore rifle, always used my friends or dads when I would hunt, so I don't know anything about scopes. I think I will purchase a scope before next deer season but dont know what size or kind to get. Dont want to go too expensive but would like something decent. Can someone give me some good info to start with and a price range to expect?

The money you spend on the scope should be as much as teh rifle. That said, Nikon has a good product, good customer service, and a great warranty. Leupold is the gold standard, don't waste any money on the VX1 or VX2 series. VXIII is a great product and best warranty in business.
Shoot different loads for your rifle once you've chosen your glass. Each rifle will shoot a different load better. (ie 150 gr 165g r 180 gr ect)
don't be afraid to burn powder and get fully confident in your rifle. Once you are you'll be a great deer hunter.

I have had many. The best for the money is the Nikon Monarch. The 3x9X is plenty for the 308 cal. For more long range guns like the 7mm Mag and such or for varmint rifles you would need more power Like 12X or even 16X. I have Leupolds as well. For the money go with the Monarch. MHO...

I too favor the 3x9x40. I am also am very parcial to Leupold Redfield and Nikon. Just put a Redfield revenge on my 223 which is 3x9x42 very nice scope.

3 x 9 is the best all-around scope in my opinion. I like Leupold but it is probably like the Ford - Chevy thing. I have hunted prairie dogs to elk with the 3 x 9 and your .308 is an excellent cartridge for deer from the smaller whitetails here to mule deer out west. You would not have a problem hunting elk with the .308 either, plenty of people I know hunt them with .308's and .270s.

I will throw in the other take on this. I use a 742 Remington Bushmaster 30-06 with a 3 x 9 x 32mm Bushnell scope. Both are inexpensive compared to most set ups. I got this as a present from my dad when I graduated from High School 37 years ago. I know it is a cheaper set up but I have never had a problem with the gun or the scope. I have lost count on the numbers of deer I have taken with it. I have aways enjoyed this gun and have never felt the desire to upgrade it due to any need. If your just going to hunt deer in this area it sounds like what you have is more then enough. If you ever plan to hunt elk or make some sniper half mile shot you might want something more but your set up does sound good enough for normal whitetail hunting around here. emoThumbsup Jmax

Have you shot the rifle with the scope? Try this before spending $$$ that you might not need to spend. 3 X 9 is very versatile. Should have a name somewhere, though.

Thanks everybody for the info. I will burn some powder then make a desicion about purchasing anouther in the future.

Like with everything in life you get what you pay for scopes are no different a cheep scope on a good gun is a bad setup ,, for a descent scope plan on anywhere from about three bills up,, I like the bushnell ellete series and the Vortex viper along with some of the others mentioned...
Also if you can post a pic of your scope we might be able to help ID it for you,,,
