So I took my boat over to Wrenchin2's house this morning so he could show me how to install a new seal kit and water pump kit. Well, the morning started out great and then ended abruptly. In short, my lower unit is shot. Yes, the one on the boat that I JUST bought...gotta love it emoRolleyes The engine is in good shape but the lower was pretty much corroded/rusted shut.

My question is this...

Would you search for a used Lower Unit?
Would you opt for a lower unit rebuild?
Would you sell the boat/motor and just get rid of it?
Would you buy a used motor and part off the old one?

Sorry for the bad news, Corey...if it is insured, you might try the plug trick you did with the Ranger.LOL. Seriously, good luck with your decision. Al

Hey Corey, What kind of motor is it? You can get good used lower units. No need to sell the boat tore-up, cause without a working motor them old boats really ain't worth much.

I would ask wrenchin2 what his expert opinion is....... He'll know which is cheaper - repair vs replace motor. emoScratch

The problem is we cant get it apart!!! I have all the heavy duty carrier tools and actually broke one arms. The carrier is frozen in . I split the carrier and heated the case to no availe. That is when we stopped. When we drained the lower it was milkshake. It is short lived. Only choice would be to split the case to salvage the internals. What he would pay for a case and carrier he could have bought a good lower. The V-4 X-flow stuff is everywhere and relatively inexpensive. It is more cost effective to replace instead of paying me to switch over. What should have been less than a $200 job had turned out to be OH NO!!!!!! emoEek

What he failed to mention is what the boat is!! It is a Allison Craft SXT!!!! This is a very sought after boat. Little more power and he would be hunting down those bullets and waving at them!!!! I would like to see him keep the boat. He should be able to get close to what he paid for it back even with the lower bad. Just my 2 cents.

I just went though that kinda with mine. Blown power head, I chose to rebuild it with a new power head. Whiskers did the same with his. I got a one year warrenty on the new one and just pray that it stays good. I have had it a while now for I think about six months and it is running well. Had it checked out twice and still looks good. The truth is you just never know. Rebuild, new or used...you just never know. If the money is not a problem I say get a new one, if the wife or expense is a little more then you want to handle now then try to get a good deal on a new lower and see what kind of warrenty you can get. Good luck no matter what you do..... emoAngel Jmax

Call that fellow up in Athens TN that works on Johnson Evinrude lowers. He did my lower unit 3 years ago for a price less than half I could get anywhere else. And he has a garage full of used units. I don't know his name but I found him in the back of a boat trader and I've heard him mentioned on the site before. I'm sure its worth a phone call at least. Good luck. I don't know what I'll do with me old Allison when the motor goes.

85hp Evinrude. I could probably get what I've got in it just selling the boat and upper motor. But, I think I'm gonna hang on to it for awhile and do some mods.

Sleeper boat huh?? All the mods on the HOT ROD OMC V-6 are the same as the V-4. Find the buble back and stuffers, 140 heads, and 1 3/8 carbs and you in business for some power.

It is a 79 85. That powerhead will not bolt up, It was 78 they changed the adapter plate and the bubble exhaust. Heads would work.
