I had a wheel bearing go down & the race is stuck on spindle. I've been told to bust it off with a chisel & a 2Lb. hammer but I'm afraid of messing up the spindle. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...2jigs...

I would get a heavy piece of steel and place under the race on the spindel and then use a BFH and chisel and do as you were told, the heavy piece of steel will keep you from bending the spindel. If you make a place on the spindel when knocking it off just use a file to clear up the spindel so that the new bearing will slide on. Piece of cake. You might need another hand to hold the heavy piece of steel under the spindel.

If you can get a puller behind it, you can rent them for AutoZone. Thats what I did with mine this summer. I rented a three way puller and pulled it right off, after I beat on it for about an hour with the BFH(guess I was'nt holding my mouth right for the BFH.)

Close enough brother Cheez.

I have had to use that long time ago....funnny hey 2jigs, you are supposed to grease them often .... BTW, when you get the old race off be sure to use sandpaper and smooooooth the spindle real good...FA

You can hit it from either side or the bottom, The race should break, the metal is very hard and brittle in a bearing and you are trying to break it, be sure and wear safety glasses to keep the metal out of your eyes. I have used a torch to heat them up and then pull them off, someone said to use a pulley puller to get it off. You might try breaking the race from the front, chisel straight back toward the axel. Hold the chisel against the spindel and race at the same time. If you can get a short chisel between the race and the backing plate, like a wedge, you might work the race off the spindel this way.

Place a rag over the spindle to help deflect flying shrapnel. Wear eye protection. Take a small ball peen hammer and place the rounded part of the head on the center of the frozen race. Strike the small hammer with the larger hammer using quick raps. Crack the race all the way across. The race will swell allowing easy removal. Be careful not to damage the spindle as it may cause the seal to leak and cause premature failure of the replacement bearing. If you have compressed air, you can also make a cut across it almost all the way through using a die grinder and cutting wheel. Then strike it with the hammers. Make sure the race and seal area of the spindle are clean before installing the new bearings. Use polishing cloth to dress up any rust or scores.

Heat up the race, then persuade it. The heat will expand the race and then most of the time you can just pop them off. Ox/Actylene works best, but a small propane tank might do the trick. Have to do it fast before the heat goes from the race to the spindle.

What he said. Spindle will be intouched this way, it'll slide right off.

Just get the puller... that's what the mechanics do. That's what I've done. And yes, you can get it off with a hammer... or a cutting tool, but why risk screwing up your trailer, delaying your time getting back on the water. Do it right the first time. Go rent a puller and be done with it. No worries in doing it right Steve....

Alright Yankee, Your younger than me & back down here that still (in some corners of town means respect) I greased it.
