Had a really solid day on the water today. My club partner and I began our prefishing for our April 29th tournament. Wheeler has come up 1.5 ft this week, and hopefully will be full pool by next weekend.

We found water temps anywhere from 61, and actually found 68 degree water in the back of one of our creeks. We caught around 15-20 bass all day, all fish fairly shallow, and we saw a ton of fish. Fish came on finesse worms, spinnerbaits, and one on a buzzbait (first of the year!).

All of the fish where relating to wood cover near spawning flats... stumps, laydowns and the best off of logjams.

We wanted to flip brush, but the water needs to come up another foot for that to be productive...

Although our best five was only 9 lbs, we still feel confident about our pattern that is developing, especially when the water comes up more, where we can flip and texas rig in thick brush... should get some hogs there.

We also fished rocky areas and rip rap, which yielded a few small small fish.

Their is a BFL Bama at Wheeler out of Decatur this Saturday, so we are going to put in at Ditto Landing upriver and fish the river section to try to locate some "emergency" Spotted Bass... ya know, try to pull a Flip :) Hopefully this will get us out of the BFL traffic.

God blessed us with a georgous Alabama day today.

Thanks Swamp Donkey!! I hope we can just stay on them up until the tournament. The Family of Fisherman tournament was out of Riverwalk yesterday, and it was won with 11 lbs, and second was 7 lbs 4 oz. Hearing that makes me feel alot better about how we did today.

Bprice, my suggestion is to stay in the creek channel and cast onto the flats adjacent, within casting distance of the channel. Most of the females should stay closer to the channel/deeper water. If there is cover near the channel, fish it first but otherwise move along quickly with 'traps or buzz baits or other baits that you can cover a lot of water with. There are tons of bass out there, just staying on the females/bigger fish is the key and they should be close to the channel, they may be shallow but they will be closer to the channel than the dink males most of the day.
