What a beautiful North Alabama day it was... I was heading back home from a business trip in Nashville all week, and I called Allen up and we decided since he was off work, and I didn't feel like going in for a half day we needed to go fishing. We started out putting in at Guntersville Dam, and immediately tried for some sauger.. we headed to the deadlock were Allen slayed them a week ago, but not much was going on, only caught one keeper.
We decided to head out to a few Wheeler cat haunts of ours (and others on this forum emoPoke)... we initially stopped were Allen had layed into that 64 and 57 last week... we fished it hard, anchored for about 30 minutes... no avail. Current was RIPPING today, we are assuming around 46k. Who knows though... we headed on down to the Painted Bluffs and quickly picked up a nice 28 lber. There must of been 15 boats sauger fishing all around us. Apparently they have been wearing them out in the deep cuts downstream from the dam. After no action for 30 minutes, we headed to our game winning hole on down river. We achored in 61 ft of water, but were reachable to 65 ft and around 52 ft. We papered the water and waited... fairly quickly Allen picked up a nice 24 lber, and these fish were quite a fight anchored in serious current. We then put the five minute warning out, when a cat ugly stick started twitching. I let the rod load up and reeled down on it to let the hook slide on in the corner of his mouth. A 4.5 minute fight insued and at the end a 52 lb beautiful Wheeler Blue was yanked in the boat. He came out of the shallower water in the area. We snapped some pics, and let her swim as always.
We got some great video today of the fights and the 3 Bald Eages we saw today. About 17 minutes worth.. hopefully Minner can post a link to them, or i can put them on my Photobucket.
Same set up as usual... Cut skipjack on the bottom. All fish came out of 50+ ft plus water... surface temperature was 52 degrees.
Was a beautiful day to get back on the water finally catfishing with Allen... hope ya'll like the pics.
