I was asked this question on another Forum. I was embarrassed to say, "I don't know."

Who knows who has "certified" scales and and will weigh a big fish?

I know that Bi-Lo, etc. have them... what I don't know is how they'll react when I started down the cereal aisle with a 115 blue catfish in a shopping cart (or in my dreams).

Seriously... does anyone know for certain where you can take any big fish to get a "certified weight?"

I've wondered the same thing. Of course, I personally carry certified scales to 12 pounds in 2 oz increments and to 100 pounds in one pound increments, but what in the world do you do with a bas..., uh, crappi...., oh yea CATFISH if you actually do manage that big one????? As for under 100, if I'm available I will be glad to weigh your fish, but you can't count on IF - that'll be the day I am not home or on the water. For BIG fish, I would suggest something like a farmers co-op or grain store. This is something we need to post answers for so folks in different communities can get that fish weighed!

Would the aquarium not have one. Boy...can you imagine the line....LOL

Anyone who uses scales in legal trade should have them. Grocery stores, meat market, grain sales, etc. These aren't IGFA certified butit doesn't matter as long as they are certified by a government agency or licensed company. If you weighed a fish on a certified scale, but not IGFA certified, the IGFA can certify it later after the initial weighing. THe problem is using scales that don't have any certification at all. IGFA won't certifiy a scale used on a record catch after the weighing occured unless it was previously certified.

With the first fish for which I needed a certified weight, I stopped in several places and I wound up having to BRIBE a guy in the meat dept of a grocery and we brought it in the back door (no grocery cart!). I would make sense that if you have any inkling that you may ever want a fish weighed, you might ask aroud ahead of time so you don't go as nuts as I did trying to get somebody to do it.

Richard, A couple of years ago I did call the BiLo up here on Hwy 58 to see if they would weigh a world record fish for me if I brought one in and they said that they would. My plan would be to bring the fish in a garbage can filled with water and wheel it in on a dolly. Weigh the fish and get it back in the water as soon as possible. I have a well so the water wouldn't have chlorine. If anyone thinks that they have a record catfish or other really big fish and needs to get it in and out of the water and back in again safely let me know. We can do it from my dock. Many of the guys on the forum have my cell number and we could get it done. I live in Wolftever.

That's great info Polo.... very good to know. I do wonder if you got anybody's name at Bi-Lo? In other words, when we call a year from now is the same person you talked to going to be around?

If you catch a tropy or state record fish on Nick-a-jack take it to Shop-Rite. Near Shellmound Mkt. Ask for Mr. Pemberton he is the Butcher there. Thats where I took my fish when I was getting it certified.

As a reminder Scales weigh in different units so be sure to make certain if it's 10th. or oz's or 100's. Such as 1.75lbs is the same as 1 3/4 lbs or 1lb 12 oz.

I was wondering if the aquarium wanted a world record fish, that if they put it in a tank there, could it be pulled back out for a official weight after the fact of does it have to be weighed when you catch the fish?? IGFA could weigh it for them selfs emoScratch emoScratch Also would the Aquarium have a way to do an official weight sence they are right there on the river ???Maybe we could get contact person up there, Personally i would like the world to be able to view a fish like that, rather than letting it go... if not definently would not want it killed...I know im probably just dreaming but you never know...emoBigsmile

I don't know about the Aquarium. I e-mailed a CFF member who works there and asked if he might be able to pop in, and weigh in (pun intended). :)

Well you certainly wouldn't want to wait anytime to weigh a fish. You wouldn’t want to wait hours much less days; the fish will lose a lot of weight. If we are talking about a bream it probably isn’t as big a deal but if we are talking about a 130lb catfish then you definitely want to get it weighed within minutes.

Friend at the Aquarium says they have scales that weigh up to 300 lbs. However he's not sure if they are "certified." He's out-of-town.... says he'll check when he returns.

I would say your right Miner, having a 5lb fish chuck-up shad....</p>

I can imagine what a 130lb cat would be

Ihave weighed a big bass over 7lbs at Bi-Lo in the Dallas bay area, I kept it in the livewell until i could go straight to the checkout with it in a weigh bag in one of the carry around store baskets. The checkout counter has certified scales for weighing produce and such...

I could just see me plopping a 30-50lb fish down on the checkout scale and all the faces around at our BiLo. That would be s a good video to make. I'll have to think about that one.
