Just got off the phone with a friend of mine who fishes in the ocean in florida. He has a 2004 115 yamie on his flats boat. He told me his boat is in the shop. Due to oil gelling. Oil alarm went off and it maybe some damage to the motor This is the situation arcording to the mech. My buddy brian switched his 2 cycle from yamalube to Pennzoil semi sytn. the 12.00 stuff at walmart not to long ago maybe a month. His tank was low when he filled up, but not empty. He uses the boat a couple times a month. That is what they are claiming is wrong. The oil gelled because he mixed it, plugged the oil screen, not enough oil to the engine. I told him I have never heard of this, I personally have switched oils in the 4 outboards I have owned and never had a problem, I thought if its Tcw 3 they could be mixed and it wouldnt be a problem. To me it sounds like a moisture issue, being so humid all the time in Fla. I dont know what to tell him what do you guys think of this, thanks

I have heard of that happening before. I just quit running that stuff in my boat because a couple of really smart guys told me to stop using it. I use the fully synthetic now.

I have heard of gear oil doing this but not 2 stroke oils. Tell him to take a sample out of the oil and take it to a fuel distributor and he can advise him of a lab that will break it down and tell him what caused it. I would sure want to know.. I have run my near empty and changed brands of oil with no ill effects.

If you can post a follow up on his outcome if you don't mind. I would be very interested in what was the cause of this.
