Kevin's post about his 5lb 5oz bass got me thinking. He caught his on a bream. Chances are, if he was fishing a plastic worm or jig, that fish would not have bitten. We all know that live bait outfishes artificial lures 5-1. Why do we continue using artificial lures to catch bass?

mallardecho - 5/26/2008 5:12 PM This should be interesting.

Yep!

I don't know...the challenge of it all? The fact I like gray hair? I love my stress level going up ? Chunkin and windin is a better work out?...

Heck, I dont know!

It will get you thinking, but it get's old ( Live bait) to me. Not nocking it at all. But there's just somthing about fooling the fish into bitting somthing that's not live bait. Besides what else would we spend our $$$ on,.... Gas? LOL. Good post jerry.

I won't get into a bass fishing argument over this question, but live bait won't outfish my plastics for crappie. Now, if someone doesn't know how to fish plastics, then certainly live bait will catch more crappie but so many crappie fishermen have the mind set that it takes live minnows to catch slabs and that just isn't true. I've had more than one minnow fisherman in my boat and they haven't outfished me yet with live bait. Of course, most of them aren't wearing crocs and that's the biggest secret to fishing success. emoUpsmile emoGeezer

Now I'll totally agree with that!

All the years I used minnows I could never have puled off what I have with pan assassins this year!!! Thanks Dickie! I enjoyed a good fish fry this evening and probably wont run out this year

I definitely agree with that statement DK. Especially if the crappie are up under the docks, there is no chance with live bait.

I have fished a number of times this spring where tournament fishermen were fishing near me. I was fishing live shad. There were times I caught at least 10 to 1 bass. Those big bass just can't resist their instincts I guess for the live bait.

The only reason I choose to throw artificial over live is because of all the TX rules. But every once in a while, if I see a big bass and I'm not in a TX, I just go right on ahead and catch me a bream and try for it, because I know it's not dumb enough to fall for an artificial when it see's me standing off the bank! Have fun, and throw a small fish for a bigger fish!

I'd say it's the challenge for me. So many of my bass are caught on my own baits too, so that just sweetens the deal. I love fooling fish on something I've made with my own two hands. Fact is, I've never in my life used live bait to target bass.

I don't hunt, but I own two bows (recurves, at that) and if I did have the time for hunting, I'd never pick a rifle up. Same thing but different: it's the challenge.

Good post, Jerry.

Because it's fun too! For me, almost any "type" of fishing can get boring after a while (blue cats excepted). I enjoy the challenge of artificial lures. Different species lend themselves to different baits and/or lures, and that changes during different times of the year. I do admit that I don't like too much of a challenge - I like to have a decent chance of catching what I target. I can think of a lot of instances in which I'd prefer using lures for bass, but this time of year and where I fish is a perfect combination for live bait fishing. At other times I get a great amount of satisfaction out of catching fish on metal, plastic, and wood (especially top water). I realize that I'm known for catfishing and using bait, but I am really a multi-species fisherman that loves to use a lot of different tools to catch a lot of different fish! It keeps it interesting!!!!!!

simply put, its the challenge, its the challenge of you going to the fish not the fish comming to you, its the casting skills you learn and use, its all about lure placement, not just casting around cover but casting into cover and finding fish wether it be bass, crappie, bream or big water grouper, swordfish and tuna. its all about the challenge

You sure got a lot of crap for a guy that fishes 4 times per year, and has a 1-fish limit..

I've never fished with live bait for bass. Anyone can take a minnow, impale it on a hook, cast it out, and let the minnow do all the work. There's very little skill involved. Taking an artificial lure and manipulating it to mimic the prey of bass is something that takes skillful movements imparted by the angler. That's the draw for me. That and the fact I hate touching yucky shad.

I like to fish shiners in the wintertime. But, for me, I'm not serious enough about big fish to fool with live bait. I like to chunk & wind, not sit and wait.

To each his own, but I'm content to catch a bunch of small fish with an occasional big fish thrown in as a bonus. That why I'm usually at the River bouncing bandits off the rocks!!
