SORRY HAVENT BEEN ON IN A WHILE IM THE ONE WITH THE BOAT HAVING TROUBLE GOING INTO GEAR . I DRAINED MY LOWER END FLUID IT HAD SOME WATER IN IT . COULD THAT HAVE CAUSED IT NOT TO GO IN GEAR GOOD.

No. Water is not a good sign. It has a mechanical cluch. It is not like a auto trans and shift hydraulic. OMC has some electric shift lowers and you see they are not around as they weren't that good of a ideal.

Short lesson.... You have 3 gears pinion, forward, and reverse. When the engine is started all 3 are turning. The propshaft is "coasting" between the forward and reverse. The propshaft have splines that the clutchdog rides on. The forward and reverse gears have lugs in them that the clutch dog also has. When you shift, you are causing the clutch dog lug and the lugs on the gear to "lock" and because the propshaft and clutch dog are splined together, then the propshaft then begins to turn. There are sever diferent ways manufactures move the clutchdog to shift it. They all basicly work the same. Water being in the case is not going to prevent a mechanical shift.

Yours are a good show and tell as they are pretty worn. I get a few I will snap a few pics for my "SHOW N TELL"LOL! DID ya get your hole fixed???

i took it out today for the first time since i changed the fluid and it went into gear ever time without making any grinding noise at all. before it was inpossible for it to go into gear without grinding and grinding.

That is good, but water in the housing is not going to keep it from shifting. If the pieces are rusted inside that would. Changing the fluid may have "loosened" the clutch dog spool if it was rusted, but if that is the case, then it probably will be short lived. Andy's had water in it and the bearings were rusted only on the bottom where the water had settled at the bottom. It would have had to be full to get the clutch dog shift spool. There is more than likely something else going on, but I hope that it did fix it. I have seen stranger things on boats!!!!!! I deal with lowers all the time full of water and shifting is not how they are found. They are found on services or when it gets cold they puke oil everywhere when the water freezes and expands. Just my opinion.

Ive had to learn the basics about the lower unit the hard way lol . do you remember my problem wrenchn ? 115 yamaha well if you dont it didnt want to go in reverse took it to chatt. fish and fun and it wasnt just the cables . just my luck !

I HOPE IT KEEPS WORKING TOO. IF NOT ILL PROBABLY BE GIVING U A CALL. I MAKES NO SINCE TO ME EITHER BUT I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM. I GOT THE BOAT IN 2003 AND THE GUY I GOT IT FROM SAID HE HAD FOUND WATER IN THE FOOT WHEN HE CHANGED THE FLUID. I HAVE CHANGED IT A COUPLE OF TIMES AND NEVER FOUND ANY UNTIL THIS TIME BUT IT DIDNT APPEAR TO HAVE ALOT OF WATER JUST A LITTLE WHEN IT FIRST STARTED DRAINING. COULD IT BE A POSSIBILITY THAT THE FLUID WAS LOW.

Get Wrechin2 to put some new seals in the lower unit for you, stop the water from getting in, the water is wearing out the gears and bearings.
