James after reading alot of post on this site im interested in having you rebuild my motor to get some more power out of it. I have a 1990 mercury 175. I have had the heads cut by jay smith in texas ( this was before I knew about this site or you ) but I would still like to get alittle more out of it. What I wanted to know is what kind of time frame am I looking at when I drop the boat off. And also what is all involved in getting about 25 more horsepower out of it or more. This is something I will be wanting to do in a couple of months and just wanted to get a little more information before I call you. Thanks

Jay and I are friends. He is a good guy. I like to give him a hard time.

The 175 and 200 are the same base blocks. The differences are the front 1/2 of the engines. You can install a 200 front, intake, and carbs and have the 25HP you are looking for. It would be a while as I have 7 engines being built right now and 1 to modify.

Here is some more things that can be done to your particular engine.

feel free to call me anytime.

No problem. What kind of boat do you have?? On some applications the 25HP may not be worth the $$$$ you would spend for 1 or 2 MPH.

its a 1990 ranger 361. i know its not a go fast boat and i dont want to run a hundred in it. Right now i run 65 loaded and i want to run 70 with a tournament load. i dont know if that can happen or not but i would like to try. You or jay are the only ones that i would trust to build my motor to get whatever you can get out of it. since i live in georgia south of dalton you are close to me and there for im going to get you to do my work. I guess just let me know what you think and then i will call you to get into the details, thanks for your help.

Jay doesn't mess with too many fishing engines and feels the 2.5L is the only engine around. I like them all. The 2.4L can make good power but is very hard to match the power of the 2.5L and the ease of modifications. Simplest thing to do is convert your engine over to a horizontal and find a set of wh-22's or wh-46's and be a solid 25+ more HP. Jay doesn't like the ideal of mismatching the two parts of the block and will tell you to find a 200 block or step up to a 2.5L. I have built many engines like that and the avatar is one of those engines. Just my .02

Your right about jay and the 2.5 thats all he wanted to talk about emoLaugh. I dont know what you mean by converting my engine to a horizontal or what a set of wh-22 or wh-46 is, could you tell me exactly what that is? Also are these parts that you can find and install. Being that you are closer to me I will absolutly be having you work on the motor, I dont want to be installing these parts your talking about because I surely dont know what im doing. Plus just talking over the computer I can tell ur alot easier to talk to than jay. Thanks again for your help

Would be a lot easier to show you the differences but...... On a vertical front, the reeds sit in a vertical position and have about a 2.5" area in the front that the air and fuel pass through and has to make a sharp curve. The horizontal front, the reeds sit in a horizontal position and has about a 5" opening and the fuel has a straight path. The straighter the path of air the more it will flow. This increase in air/fuel flow will increase power output. More air and fuel that makes it into the combustion chamber at a correct ratio, will make more power. Think of it like full throttle versus 1/2 throttle. The Wh-22 and Wh-46 are 200 HP carb numbers that you would want to find to make the power.

Thanks Josh for the kind words. Yours still doing good?

ok thanks for that, i understand what you are talking about. Are these carbs something I can buy new from mercury or do I need to start looking around and seeing if I can find some used. Thanks.

Used. NLA from mercury and would be very expensive. Most of the time they go for $100 to $200 a set. I have the front and intake. You should have a 1 piece cowl that lifts off of the engine if it is a 90 model.

yes i have the one piece cowl. ok ill start looking for the set of carbs. if i remember right its three sets correct? And you say you have to other pieces. If you need to sell them now then i will send you the money for them to hold them for me untill i can get the other stuff and my boat to you if you need me to. Thanks again for your help.

hey james ive been looking for the carbs but i really dont know where to look to find them and there for im not having much luck. do you have any suggestions?

if i were to buy these can you clean them up and make everything right with them? i know you probley can but i just want to make sure before i buy them. he says there is alittle rust on them and they need to be rebuilt.

Rust on those plates will not have any effect on the carbs. There is a gasket between the plates and carb bodies. Cosmetic only. I can clean them with no problem.
