Ok so one day i hit the trim button to take to motor toter off.... and the trim barely moved... then just stopped and now wont move at all.... the relays seem to be fine!!..... BUT i noticed that the ground wire that grounds the trim to the metal on the motor is melted.. what is the problem.... i have been told its probably a bad ground somewhere from the battery to where it connects to the motor??????? Here is a picture i found on iboats forum of someone with a similar problem.... this is not mine but the same wire as the picture..... If this is just a bad ground somewhere...... is the trim motor shot now or will it work again once i fix the problem (assuming its a ground problem)

First off, I need to know what brand and HP engine we are talking about.

Most late model trim motors are 2 wire and do not use a ground from the "motor" and these can be identified by the use of relays instead of solenoids. So a bad ground would be out of the possibilities. The earlier version, and some late model, trim motors would have 3 wires and would ground under the cowl, not where this is pictured. This of course on all the trim motors I have dealt with on Mercury, American made Mariners, Johnson, and Evinrude. The other manufacture would be same also. The wire in the picture sorta looks like a trim sending unit wire for the gauge as it is way too small for a trim motor.

This must be bad trim week. I personally had to work on 3 trim systems today. emoEek

Wrenchin... your right that is not the same wire... i was mistaken..... here is an ACTUAL pic of my motor wiht my problem wire....

The first pic is the actual wire that is melted(green) this is a 3 wire setup.... 90 HP evinrude!!

The second picture is a box that those wires go into with the ground melted all the way to that box!! ONLY THE GREEN is melted

That is a 2 wire system. The box is a relay center. The wire you are pointing to looks to be one of the control wire for the relay and not the actual wires going to the trim motor . The trim motor wires are larger and come into the box via a pig tail towards the cowl. I will be a the Chick dam ram in a little while. if you want to run it over, I will see if I can get it going or see what the issue is. I will put in the truck what I think I will need.

now there is also the two bigger BLUE AND GREEN WIRES that go directly into the trim... The 3 smaller wires... well i dont know where they go but the travel with the two big wires all the way down to the trim and i loose them when they gointo the side near the trim below the cowl

Thanks James... I really appreciate you taking the time and checking it out for me!! Theres not many guys out there that would do that anymore.. your a stand up guy in my eyes and I have found my new marine mechanic for sure... and will refer you to anyone who is looking for one!!

Here are the parts I showed you today that need replaced. they can be picked up at almost any OMC dealer or found on the internet.

PT# 0432639 $6.49, PT# 0432572 $12.60, and PN# 0324678 $2.70. These are national list and may vary from where you get them as their matrix may be higher. These will make your engine run a lot better.
