You have to be really good to repair them into useable condition. Especially if you tear the netting from the pull ring like I have. Suck it up and purchase another from Ego Craig.
If you can find a way to tear/destroy a cast net, I have done it all. Main lines, netting, you name it. The issue comes from the material. Thinner, more limber netting performs much better, and therefore tears much easier.
The one i have is thicker material so i can thread and fix almost any size with a spool of line and a toothpick. I have hung a main line at the dam a number of times already, just tied em back and melted the knot later.
Actually, the smaller threadfin aren't near the problem because they don't get gilled. I got this one after I started getting into the small threadfin and the 3/8 looked like a silver christmas tree when I brought it up - all gilled shad. Spent a lot of time and effort getting them out. With the smaller mesh I just dumped them out after picking out the big ones. I haven't used it in the last few years since the shad have been bigger where I get them. It is slower to sink however. Just thought I'd offer!
Well guys I am in the same boat now. I can't fix the holes a big rock put in my net tonight. It was a good net and caught many baitfish for me. RIP.
Moving forward, I am in the market as well for a net. If possible 8ft or so and with a 3/8in pattern. I know that is kinda specific, but I figured I would ask before I headed to the store. Might have to ask my wife for one for my birthday. Another month or so.
Possibly the most frustrating part....as I am shredding my net getting it out of the water, a school if threads swim up the side of the bank and right by me. Without thinkin, I dropped the rest of the net in the water and scooped out 4 as they swam on. Made me laugh in the midst of the frustration.
