Twilson needed another boat to fish the Big Bro Tx today out of HBSP, so I obliged and after a long night on the Chick, zero hours of sleep, and about 3 pots of Waffle House coffee, we set out at about 6:30 with one goal in mind....Have Fun!
Taylor is a 15 yr old boy that really seems to love fishing. He was eager to learn why I was rigging certain baits a certain way, and why "this" bait was better than "that" bait in certain situations. He successfully threw many different lures today, but sadly we didn't have much luck catching fish Hopefully Taylor still had a good time as I know I sure enjoyed spending the day with him and his Big Brother Chris. Chris mentioned he liked to fly fish, but hadn't done a lot of bass fishing. He got the rhythm of his spinning reel after a little bit and started casting like a pro!
Taylor could also cast very well with a spinning rod. He had brought his own rod, but the line was all tangled inside the bell and it was taking forever to try and get it straightened out. Luckily I had brought along my dropshot spinning rig and spooled it up real quick for him. He threw T-rigs, shakeys, dropshots, cranks, and topwaters, but we just couldn't get them to bite his lure We fished in close quarters with twilson and his partners, as well as bustinbass and his guys. We were all throwing the same things and targeting the same fish, but they were catching them left and right and I couldn't get them to even give us a sniff! I could tell it was frustrating them after a while, so we made a run back toward wolftever and targeted some blowdowns.
We didn't find any bass, but the Gar were stacked in there thick! They were very active on top, so for the fun of it, I tied on some topwaters on all of our rigs and we chased the Gar for a while. They were aggressive to strike, but never could get our trebles hooked up. It was still a blast to watch them slam our spooks and spit'n images. Taylor got excited several times and almost got one to hook up before it shook away. Chris did have one hook up on his, but he yanked a couple time too many and ripped it out. He got a little excited as well.
Decided to try to find some bass again and moved back to where we started. No luck there either so we moved back into HBSP and beat the banks for a minute before trailering and calling it a day.
I was disappointed that I wasn't able to get them on any fish. Just one of those days where the bass just don't like what we tried. Still had a blast and it was a good cause to see Taylor and all the other young'ns get excited about being on the water. Im glad twilson invited me and I hope to do this yearly from now on. Got some great gift bags and got to see a lot of youngsters enjoy the sport we all love so much. I was happy to be a part of it.
Went to Hooters with Thomas and Ben afterwards to get some grub and a cold one. Chatted for a bit then headed to Georgia. On the way home I lost a hub and a bearing right at exit 353. Got over and eased off the exit and pulled into the Shell station. Luckily, twilson was right behind me and he knows the guys at Brainerd dragstip. We pulled in there and Thomas went to work taking it all off and strapping the axles up to the frame so that I could limp home. Thanks a TON Thomas. You truly are a great friend. Thanks for the beer too! emoToast Got it ready to roll and started the long, slow trek down 41 towards Cohutta. Made it back with no more problems and gave Bbass a call. Thanks Billy, I'll be in touch.
It's been a LONG 36 hours. No sleep, lots of caffeine, not many fish, and trailer problems.....I'm going to bed!
