I was out yesterday and my boat got stuck in rev. It is an 02 Vmax on a Tr 21. It took some working but I got it out of rev and it when in to fwd ok. It will go into rev but the shifter won't go much past neutral. Anybody else have this problem and is there anything i can do before taking to a mech. I need to get it working right before the FLW comes on the 18th, I'm scheduled to take one of the college teams out that sat.

mine did that and it was a "burr", one of the cables in the cable was broken/frayed

Could be that or that the grease is gone in the shifter or linkage at the motor.

Wrenchin is great at trouble-shooting allot of things and helped me out a ton on my last issues on my Yami. He and i found 1 or 2 problems I was having over the phone! Great guy!!!

Take a look at iboats.com Theres a place just for Yamahas and the techs online that help are great.

It may also be a shift interupt switch (not sure if yours has one as not a Yammi guy). When a switch does not engage, it will go into gear easily but will not come out. If when this occurs you can turn the engine off and it comes out easily, then it is more thatn likely the switch or a adjustment. It may be the cable as mentioned before or a bushing in the control box. What will it do when the engine is off and you shift?? If it has additional effort, have someone to slowly rotate the prop to align the cluch lugs. Just my .02

It is stiff shifting when the motor is off as well. I put it in fwd and rev (motor not running of course) at the house right before i put it in the garage and it was still hard to get into reverse.

Need to have someone rotate the prop as you shift. If it is still stiff, it may be a cable or issue in the control box or lower unit (probably the least likely)

I had my son spin the prop and put it in gear and that seemed to fix the problem. We put it in the water and it worked like a champ. I can't tell you how much i appreciate the advise.

That shouldn't have repaired anything. If it doesn't want to come out again, turn it off and see if it will come out. If so, let us know.

take the cowling off and check and see if something is blocking the cable from moving backwards. i had an issue once and a cable had moved into the way of the shift cable and it was making it hard to shift. it took two minutes to fix it. hope this helps.
