Planning a trip out to Yellowstone in the fall just wandering how many have been out there? Planning on staying in or near Island Park, Idaho. Hope to get to hear the Elk bugle for I die.
truly God`s Country!!!! I was there in 2nd week of June and there were Elk everywhere....mostly cows and young uns. I spent 3 days doing a basic drive thru....wasted a few hours waiting on Old Faithful...disappointing. Try to time it and /or have a meal in the lodge while you wait. It is truly one of the most beutiful places I`ve ever seen. It would be hard to do everything you would like to see in less than 2 weeks. I`m trying to figure out how to spend a summer season there.....work a little and sightsee a lot... when I retire. Allow as much time as you can afford !
I have been twice. Truly a beautiful place. The bison OWN the roads. Be patient. If you venture down to Jackson Hole, (which is way too pricey and commercialized,IMO) you will have some great views of the lake, with those beautiful mountains in the background. If you do make it to Jackson Hole, COWBOYS MILLION DOLLAR BAR is a gotta see.
I`ll second the Million dollar bar......I actually stayed in a little motel in Jackson hole within walking distance for a couple of nites fairly cheap....Nation Elk preserve right there too And you drive thru the Grand Tetons coming from Yellowstone.
Lamar Valley is usually the best area for wildlife viewings (at least in the summer). Driving the loop takes time, plan for many stops to see the sites and for standing still in the road while waiting for animals to cross. I stayed in West Yellowstone, but that was because my work was on that side of the park. PS I saw more elk in Rocky Mtn National Park, but Yellowstone is a must see.
