I did a little research on them a while back and understand there a several different type bullets. Will they all shoot thru the same gun or do they require different chambers.
also what do you think about other small caliber such a the 25/06 , 22/250, 22 mag etc. I ve managed to lob my 22 LR and kill a couple of ground hogs here around the house but would like to find something better.
Thanks for any info !

i prefer the 22 mag over all. i have never had any problem with any, but i go with what i put a lot of faith in just my o2 emoEnforce emoThumbsup

the 17 has a number of differnt chambers not all through one.... the 25/06 would be some more over kill the 22 mag would be the cheapest route also i do believe... unless you are planning on doing some major shoting then i would suggest you look into the 223 an maybe even the 17 fireball just my thoughts

.17 is AWESOME!!!!!! I cant give that gun enough praise! I worked on a plantation in Sparta Ga last year for 12 weeks for a Wildlife Mgmt internship, and the biologist had a new Marlin .17HMR i believe that he carried with him on his tractor and it was the best shooting gun I have ever laid my hands on. Great varmit gun. Dropped a Yote in its tracks at almost 100 yds. Ive owned a ton of .22s and .223s and Id take the .17 over them in an instant! Shot a buzzard with it at about 50 yds and it all but split the thing in half. Those little ballistic tips are nasty! Id reccommend one to anybody who likes to do a lot of that type of shooting!

I agree with you 2000XLDVee I own a .17 caliber. marlin bolt action bull nose with scope and laminate stock would not trade it for anything i shoot Hornady 17gr 2550fps with polymer-tipped bullet. over the years i have shot 22s-22mags Rugers and Winchesters,Savage, and i will most likely just stick with this Rifle from now on!

I have the Savage 17HMR it is kinda of high to shoot but it is a great gun and VERY accurate. Mine has a wood thunb hole stock and stainless bull barrel. The Accu. Trigger is the best part you can find that swet trigger pull.

Ditto on the positive remarks of the .17

I had a 17HMR in a single shot H&R w/bull barrel.

With scope I could consistantly hit the head of a squirrel target at 100 yds. Very flat shooter but wind can be a problem at very long ranges.

For game above rabbit size I would want more bullet mass though, what I could find of remaining projectiles seemed to indicate that it fragmented badly. Understandable though for that kind of velocity/mass.

VERY FUN TO SHOOT wish I still had mine sometimes. The 17 should do what you are wanting though.

I used to have 22.250 quite a few years a go, finest shooting rifle I ever had, had a 30 power scope and you could drive nails with it at any distance.

17 HMR is deadly on small game out to 150 yards. 17 Mach 2 is deadly on small game out to about 100 yards. Either will take out small varmints within their respective ranges. 22 mag is cheaper to shoot but is nowhere near as flat a shooter as the 17 HMR. 25-06 is a light deer rifle. 22-250 is one of the ultimate long range varmint calibers. In capable hands it can take out a coyote at 400 plus yards. 223 is cheap to plink with but shooting quality ammo is just as expensive as the 22-250. The 223's effective range is under 300 yards unless the shooter is very experienced.

If you really want to step off the deep end call a guy in Ooltewah by the name of Jerry Erby (J&S Casting). He can point you in the direction for multiple wildcat .17's. One of my favorites is the .17/30. M1 30cal brass necked down to take a 17 cal bullet. The ones he was using are solid copper turned on a lathe. Expensive, but SWEET! P.O Ackley wrote a book about this little critter. There is also a website called www.acurratereloading.com that will answer just about any firearm related question you have. There are tons of gunsmiths and people that have more money than they know what to do with on this site that play with every caliber known to mankind and a few that are not.

If you do decide to get into the wildcat game a Contender would be the best option for trying a calliber out before buying a rifle.

I like the .17HMR. I have a Savage .17 HMR with the Accutrigger and it is AWSOME. Everything that has been posted is true about it. Right now the price of ammo is not a concern because all ammo prices has went up. I had to start reloading .223 for my AR-15.

The .17 is fun but a little expensive to shoot, compared to .22's. I've squirrel hunted with one and if you're planning on keeping them for the table head shots are a must. Too much for squirrels, not enough fot larger critters. My 2 cents. But, buy what you want..........can't have too many guns or fishing rods.

Thanks for the info guys....there are alot small caliber type to choose from for sure...I just thought about a .222 my uncle.has in his case !

The .222 is an excellent round. Ballistically it is very close to the .223. Only problem with the .222 is that it never really got popular so ammo is expensive and hard to find.
