223 drop

Maverick,
You are partially correct. It's been about 20 years but I believe it's 25 yards. It's called a "Battle Sight Zero" or BZO. A bullet crosses the line of sight two times. Once on the way up, then once on the way down. The 25 yard zero will also sight you in at 300 yards (if I remember correctly). From a 300 yard zero, 500yds is not a huge adjustment.
Im sure you can google USMC Rifle Qualification and see the 500 yard qualification for yourself. The 1000 yard shooting I did was at a unknown distance course and yes we were lobbing rounds down. If I remember correctly the M16 rear sight adjustment goes out to 800yds.
The difference between a 556 "military" round and a 223 is just a few hundred fps and hand loads let you make up much of the diffrence. Most AR15's made today are WYLDE and can shoot both 556 nato and 223 anyway.
Yes I do like the 308 better and it is a longer range round but the ar is so fun and cheaper to shoot. If I had to pick one it would be either a 338 lapua or a 260 remington. The 206 will be my next gun!!!!

Have you thought about a 6mm. That is what most shoot in compitition at 300 meters. By the way if you notice no one is filming the gunner. BS. I would have to see it in person to believe it.

Yeah the 6mm are nice. 6.5, 260, 260 ackley, 308, ect. ect. Were splitting hairs at this point. I just like a 260. It's all personal preference at this point.
Find a range locally and I will meet you there and make you a believer. I live in Cleveland. 300 to 500 yards!! (I would expect an apology afterward on this site!) emoPoke

as for me I will be in tnn at least 2 times a month and will be glad to go to any range you want and show you I can put 5 in the bull at 100 150 and 200 I want put faith in any thing past 200 but let me know when and where and lets send some rounds down range "if I am the gunner as far as filming I will see what I can do "

I think we are talking 300+. procraft. Humdinger you would get an apology if you can take a 223 and hit bulls eye at said difference, especially at 500. That is just too funny. By the way, I suggest you bring lots of ammo.

Anyone who thinks a 556 want shoot with a 308 at 300 meters is a fool. Granted the 55gr mil spec load is garbage. If your gun is an 8twist or faster go to the 77 or 75 gr loads. I am a designated marksmen instructor and can tell you we have taught a lot of troops to hit tagets well past 300 meters.

Thanks for your service weims.
Again, just to qualify with the M16A2 we had to shoot out to 500. That's without a scope too.

Love my 7 mm RUM 140 gr nosler ballistic tip with 90.5 gr of reloader 22 3500 fps. Zero at 250 yds -27 at 500. You can make a bad shot on a deer and it still want go no where! Lol

humdinger you are right about shooting a 223 out to 500 yards, thing is the targets they are shooting is about half the size of a door and all you have to do is clip the target and it is a score. A 22 will make it that distance if you aim high enough. I am not sure if you can get permission but Lew Loyd has a range near Big Daddy's Outdoors, in which he owns. I think that range goes out to about 1000yds next to a field. I know him pretty well, next time I fish down there I will stop in and ask. I have a couple of new A4s I need to set up anyway, have had for over a year now and not even shot. lol My next purchase will be a 50 cal sniper. I am still trying to figure out what glass to put on it.

Yes it is a big target but we didn't have s scope. Factor in a scope, better ammo with heavier bullets, and a newer better built gun that's not half wore out and it becomes a lot easier!

I did not have a scope either, I was in Army, 13 Bravo. I basically carried a M203 until I started training troops on the Nuclear Round. Hard to miss with that. How would you like that job, think about it.
