Got out again to fish under the HBSP dock where the big bass have been.... Well 2 good ones were there today. It was around 11AM and was ready to get one of the bass off a bream. Put a piece of bread on a small hook that I had rigged up on a small crappie rod... First bream bite of the day, started pulling it in fast and the dang bass grabbed it and broke my line!
I have a 7foot rod ready to go with a 4/0 hook on it... So I could hook the bream through the lip, to bad that bass got his first meal of the day.
Put on a new hook, caught me another bream... placed it on the 7foot rod, but no strike... Let that bream go. Waited awhile so the bass can be ready to go for another "reaction strike". About 30 minutes later, I casted out to catch me another bream... instead of a bream it happened to be a HUGE golden shiner... Put it on the 7foot rod and threw it out there... I first noticed the bigger bass of the two come right up behind it... it missed and missed, then the smaller bass (The 5lb 5oz) came up and they were both splashing around top, chasing the shiner... but no, the couldn't get it!!! Finally the shiner swam up right to the bank where I was standing, one bass came up and tried to get it, but swam off. Threw the shiner right back out there, the bigger bass finally got it and took it under the dock... Gave about 10 seconds before setting the hook, yanked super hard! Started fighting, then I didn't feel anything.
The fish came loose... my shiner was dead.... Waited another 30 minutes, went for 1 more bream, got the bite and started pulling it in, as I was doing this, the smaller bass of the two came right up behind it while I was getting it in. I didn't let him get it cause it was 4lb test line on the crappie rod... Got the bream and put it on the 7 foot rod. Threw it out about 5 feet from me and the bass got a hold of it by the head, as I watched. The bass took the bream under the dock and kept swimming off with it... waited about 10 seconds, then yanked HARD... this time she was hooked for good, a way she wouldn't get away, unless of course she broke the line... Got her up to the bank after what was an awesome fight... noticed she wasn't as big as the 7lber I caught there a couple weeks ago... took the fish up into the shade, weighed it and got a couple photos.... 5lbs 5oz was the weight, according to the Rapala Scale.
It was a blast, I've seen bigger fish there, and plan to keep on fishing this way, unless its a TX.
