Got out again to fish under the HBSP dock where the big bass have been.... Well 2 good ones were there today. It was around 11AM and was ready to get one of the bass off a bream. Put a piece of bread on a small hook that I had rigged up on a small crappie rod... First bream bite of the day, started pulling it in fast and the dang bass grabbed it and broke my line!

I have a 7foot rod ready to go with a 4/0 hook on it... So I could hook the bream through the lip, to bad that bass got his first meal of the day.

Put on a new hook, caught me another bream... placed it on the 7foot rod, but no strike... Let that bream go. Waited awhile so the bass can be ready to go for another "reaction strike". About 30 minutes later, I casted out to catch me another bream... instead of a bream it happened to be a HUGE golden shiner... Put it on the 7foot rod and threw it out there... I first noticed the bigger bass of the two come right up behind it... it missed and missed, then the smaller bass (The 5lb 5oz) came up and they were both splashing around top, chasing the shiner... but no, the couldn't get it!!! Finally the shiner swam up right to the bank where I was standing, one bass came up and tried to get it, but swam off. Threw the shiner right back out there, the bigger bass finally got it and took it under the dock... Gave about 10 seconds before setting the hook, yanked super hard! Started fighting, then I didn't feel anything.

The fish came loose... my shiner was dead.... Waited another 30 minutes, went for 1 more bream, got the bite and started pulling it in, as I was doing this, the smaller bass of the two came right up behind it while I was getting it in. I didn't let him get it cause it was 4lb test line on the crappie rod... Got the bream and put it on the 7 foot rod. Threw it out about 5 feet from me and the bass got a hold of it by the head, as I watched. The bass took the bream under the dock and kept swimming off with it... waited about 10 seconds, then yanked HARD... this time she was hooked for good, a way she wouldn't get away, unless of course she broke the line... Got her up to the bank after what was an awesome fight... noticed she wasn't as big as the 7lber I caught there a couple weeks ago... took the fish up into the shade, weighed it and got a couple photos.... 5lbs 5oz was the weight, according to the Rapala Scale.

It was a blast, I've seen bigger fish there, and plan to keep on fishing this way, unless its a TX.

Fishinvol - Yes, that does take the "sport" out of it... it's not like your fishing hard, throwing artificial lures out where you're not sure there's gonna be a fish or not... BUT, THIS IS FUN!! Big bass are biting this way and I can't resist... These bass will not hit artificial baits...only big and live bait fish.

But, I gotta say, those are like Harrison Bay pets. I've never seen anyone fishing that before. Its kind of like a area where people eating or walking can enjoy looking at a few fish. Gotta admit, its a pretty cool spot.

We were talking to a guy yesterday, he said he caught an 11 pounder right there on a bream. I gotta start naming these fish!

There isn't a problem fishing there... State Park guys came up and several other folks came around and watched me haul in this one. Kids going on and on... "its a big one!!!!", as I released it back. Now, I hope you don't have a problem with me here... People can still enjoy watching a load of fish swim around.

No worries Kevin, I don't think anyone has a problem with it as long as you are letting them live on. They are some toads, but I bet there are even more of them as you follow the dock too. They probably just don't let themselves get spotted by people. It's to easy of a meal for them not to be all around those docks.

Bprice - 5/25/2008 7:09 PM Good job Kevin, who cares if they are pet fish or whatever, I'm just glad you got a haircut!!!! :):)

I've seen bigger fish sitting there... maybe 10lbs +

compared to the sizes I've seen, then have caught this year... the look quite a bit smaller in the water.

I think Brandon grew that out himself... unless he snuck into the Barbor Shop and stole some of my 15 pounds of hair that was on my head.

This all reminds me of a classic Beavis and Butthead show, where Butthead steals hair from a barber shop to paste on his face, because he wanted to look "smooth."

Nice fish. I agree that those are like pet fish but don't see anything wrong with catching them as long as their released. I would hate to know that one of those fish went on someones wall. That would be like the people that pay to trophy hunt in a 20 acre fence and are proud of killing one. atleast with fish you can release it. But even if you catch a 15 pounder it would be hard to brag about under those circumstances.

Nah... no need to brag when you're catching them on live bait. Just throw a bream and have fun! Then when it comes to "real" bass fishing, throw artificial... you know, I've gotta have a break from that every now and then.

I'm taking a pretty good break from artificial, cause I'm going again tomorrow! Then it's back to the "real" fishing on Tuesday. (Parksville Dogfight)

Wish me luck... and if I catch anything over 14lbs 5oz... TWRA is gonna be involved!

I don't care if I catch it on a bream or NOT!! It's STILL fishing.

I agree they are kinda like pet fish...but you said you fished for four hours the other day and still didn't get it to bite so they aren't that easy to catch. Even if they are they are sure fun to reel in.
