89 80hp on my 17ft Hyrda sports .. do you think it will get on plane ?

I found a deal on a 1989 Johnson 88spl motor dirt cheap with controls, do you think it will get on plane with this motor ? and how fat do you think it would go ?
Trying to decide what to do ... I have one opinion .. just want to see what others think ?
I know Id be better off with a 150hp since this boat is rated for a 150 .. but man they are hard to find at a price I wana spend

My boat is about 1300 lbs without people and gear and I had an 88 115hp that wasnt in its prime and it got it on plane. I say it would do it no problem.

Id have to find a 125 lol .. I dont know what it is .. motors seem to be in short supply over 115, at least a a reasonable cost, but Im in no real hurry right now anyway .. I dont have the boat ready to put on motor any how

Yea I saw it on craigslist .. Id be willing to be it was gone .. and if it makes it to next week when I have some more money I'll make it gone, then I'll have a boat to sell that needs a motor lol

Its near Athens, Tn .. I havent seen it yet .. it came off of a Pontoon boat ( according to them ), it may be a long shaft ? They had no clue .. I guess Im gonna have to drive up there and look at it in person .. If I dont buy it I'll let you know all the details when I get back, they wanted 425 a week ago ... 325 today .. and I might be able to get it for 200 who knows lol .. they keep calling me with a better offer .. Im almost afraid its stolen or trash and not worth 10 bucks .. but only way to know is to go see for my self

If it is in decent shape and pushing what it should that will work. You might consider a fin for the lower unit just to help it some. Jmax

this boat I think wieghs less than 900 lbs .. but when you add my big but .. and my wife and son .. I guess we will just be going slow lol

Worse case is to prop it low. You could make a 50 put it on plane with a small enough prop. Hell hurry up and we will throw this 85 I have on it and see if it will make you happy. Maybe I will still have one of the 115's or maybe another v-6. You can find the old BDI 150's or a block and all the guts out of the 115 will work. The difference is a booster port. The old inline 115 is strong but the newer is stonger. That 87 115 is nothing more but a ADI 150 with the way horspower rating was changed in 83. Close enough.
