I bought a new Abu blackmax two months ago and now for some reason when I set the hook it decides to free-spool on me emoAngry !? Missed several good fish because of this, at first I thought I was accidentaly hitting the button causing it to do this, but this is not the case.

I have an old ambasseduer that has worked flawlessly since my dad gave it to me back in 94! I still use it for my carolina rig. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them??

If the gears are like the old ABU's it's probably just a pawl that isn't locking in. I had a 5600 do the same. I took it apart and put some grease on the main gear and never had the issue again

What kind of line are you using?

I was using the 14lb test Cajun line...I ran out of braid so this was what I had layin around the garage. I know some people hate it but, (knock on wood) I have another shimano baitcaster that has the Cajun line since last summer and it's been working fine.

I am almost afraid of takin this one apart...tried that with another reel and before I knew it parts and springs and gizmos were flyin everywhere. If it wasn't for 2jigs taking it to a friend of his that reel would still be collecting dust.

timbo makes a good point. The assembly line usually puts the bare minimum oil on, it takes time to wipe it up if it drips. I will use a new reel a little while to seat the gears in, after that I give it a a solid oiling.
