I know for a fact carters ain't no 600ft deep. The deepest I have marked and this is going off memory here out was around 390 in front of the dam. Been about a year since I have been on Carters. It's pretty clear. The only water I have seen clearer (in Georgia) is Blue Ridge. I'd say Carters has about 10ft visibility (guessing). Blue Ridge 12+. Now Mead out in Vegas was the clearest water I have ever fished. 20+ visibility is easily achieved that was pretty neat fishing a sunken tumbleweed in 20ft of water with a dropshot ;). Nice fishies you got there Louie :)

And I know for a fact that one part of Carters IS 600 ft. deep. We never had the finder lie to us about the depth of anything. I just thought that maybe the pinnacles that were coming up where something real, or maybe it was just baitfish.

If I ever get back up on Carters, in a boat, I will be more than happy to show you where that part of the lake is. If I didn't remember it so vividly, I wouldn't have mentioned it.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, who built the lake, say on their web site that Carters Lake is the second deepest manmade lake east of the Mississippi with the deepest water being just over 450 feet deep. John your depthfinder told you a little fib that day.

I fished Carters before it was a lake.... When I was a kid we used to pack in and fish the river there. Used to be some really good fishing in the Cartecay and Ellijay rivers. They join together to make the Coosawattee. We used to go and stay for 2 or 3 days at a time. It was a good place to hunt also. When the lake was being surveyed it took a lot of folks property away from them. There was a lot of old mtn. farms and old house places in there. they closed the area for almost 7 years while it was being built and backed up. They only cut the timber from the low water mark up to the full pool mark. The rest was covered and when it filled it covered some good sized mtns. and ridges. There was 2 different waterfalls that was covered.
The deepest part of the lake is at the point coming out of the ramp area at the dam. If you put in there you can ease out to the channel and turn to the right and ease out from the bank and find it. It is just at 452 ft deep there. Just up from there on one of the points from the boat dock, there was a plane crashed. The man and two women who were on board got out but the plane sank. It was too deep to be recovered. It used to be hung up on some tree tops and you could find it on yer depth finder. The last I saw it finally got on down in there and you can't find it anymore.
Carters had an extremely good bass fishing in it. There have been some really big large mouth caught there. It has been sometime since I have heard of any really big ones but I know of one or two 11 lber's that came from there. Used to go and fish it at night and go for one bite- one fish. It usually came in over 8 or better. They stocked walleye in there and they are doing good. It is a hard place to fish but it can be one of the best in the world when everything lines up right. The spots are awsome. My personal best from there was 5 # 12 oz. caught it at two thirty one morning.
Will give just a word of caution. If you have never fished mtn. lakes before just keep in mind that when the fog comes in you better be getting to where you want to be or you will be spending the nite. There are no private properties on the lake, therefore no lights. The only lights that are at water level is at the ramps or the marina. If you go I would reccomend not using Ridgeway ramp as I have seen more than one go in the water. It is a very steep ramp and not really tollerable. I would use the ramp at the dam or Doll mtn ramp. Woodring branch ramp is good also. There are some nice camping places at woodring branch and Doll Mtn. If you guys and gals get a hankering to go for a Sunday drive, I would reccomend just driving down and take a picnic lunch to the dam. If you are afraid of heights don't look off the dam as you cross it. It's really worth the trip just to see it. There is a nice park at the dam and you can see the small lake from there and the pump back station. Sorry for the long post but I get carried away talkin about home....

LB, I would appreciate you coming clean. The only good thing about Carters is the location. Don't tell these folks about our lake. Go ahead and tell the truth. This is good for one or two good trips a year and that's bream fishing. If any of you guys need any info LB and his partner Triton breath were raised on this lake and when they have a mind to they show up and take everones money. Carters is a beautiful lake! This fall when the leaves are changing the ride to the dam and other parts of the lake are special. The lake is a wilderness lake and the veiw form the lake almost everywhere is like you are there by yourself. This time of year and later in the winter you will see very few boats, alot of wildlife and the fishing ain't bad. You can believe LB, he is the man. The deepest water I have ever found is where LB mentioned earlier at the mouth of Fisher Creek around 450 feet at full pull. emoWorthy

If I were on the lake, and were driving, I could show you this part. All I know is that it's about 50 yds. off the shoreline, and there is a point that forms up ahead and to the left. I wouldn't say it if it weren't true. I remember the graph just as plain as day. I could even draw it out for ya. LOL

I was always under the impression that it wasn't any deeper than 400 ft., until I found that one spot. Not sure that it's good for fishing or not. LOL

Thanks for the reply. I never knew of the plane crash thats pretty neat. My father also spent lots of time on the rivers before the lake was built, the stories never end LOL. Thanks again.
