This was one of my favorite ways to fish. Set the motor at about 1 rpm and troll against the current on Nickajack.. Trolling rock walls and channel ledges always seemed to produce some nice bass. Crankbaits would get lost from time to time but the payoff was worth it.. Try trolling from the clubhouse at Golf and Country club down that whole bank about 20-30 ft out from the shore in about 12-16 ft of water with some deep divers and I bet you catch some fish.. I would usually let about 50-75 feet of line out..Also the interstate wall at Moccasin Bend was a good spot. From Chattanooga Creek down past Lookout Creek to where the rock bank turns into rip rap.

Killer method when its right for sure! I have trolled DD-22's on Chic for early summer bass and hung some good fish last year. The prob is, you get lots of dirty looks from hard-core bassers, I guess they think its cheating like using live bait? I even had to boats get so mad watching me go back and forth on a channel ledge once (I was there 30 mins before they got there), they both decided they had enough, and jumped on the ledge after I made a pass, and then I had to go around them. emoBang I made sure to go about 20' from both of them....they were emoHoppingmad

We do that it the tailraces for smallies from time to time. Usually a crawfish patterns works well.

BTW you'd be going aweful slow at 1 rpm. ;)

DK, I do not believe it is just Bass Fisherman he likes to infuriate....He now has a new long casting trick in his bag, just ask Bent Rod. emoPoke

Maybe he meant "mph," but that's still kind of slow to get a crankbait down, unless going against the current which makes effective speed 4-5 mph.

Regardless... thanks for sharing JDK. It is appreciated even when we give you grief.

If you're not fishing a tournament I see nothing wrong with trolling. That is one way I can always get my dad catching fish.

Haha yea I meant 1000 rpm's doh.. its a 1 usually on the tach.. basically as slow as u can idle without killing the motor.I had a bass tracker with a 40 hp so it made it easier id imagine its harder with a big motor like a 225.. Yea its not acceptable in tourney's but if you just looking to catch some nice bass its a fun relaxing way to do so...
What crankbaits do you guys like..My favorites were DD-14 or DD22 depending on depth or Lure Jehnsen Hot Lips.. They cna be deadly.. For casting i enjoy the rapala shad raps.

Sounds like you have a case of short, fat man syndrome and just like to piss people off?

I second that with the Luhr Jensen Hot Lips Express or Baby Hot Lips. I will often hang one over the side as I move slowly to a new position (winter and fall). Many times I am more successful this way than casting to specific locations. Do others use a trolling bar or just hold a couple rods and steer?

yea i just hold my rod lol that sounds funny.. i tried different rod holders but none seemed to work as well as just holding the rod over the edge..I always leave my spool open and keep my thumb on the line so i can easily let more line out or line it go if i get hung so i can go back and try to get it un done

Some days it'll work better than anything. One cold, spring morning RSimms showed me his trolling tricks and we loaded the boat with crappie. But I'm not a purist, I think they sometimes forget how to have fun. Yesterday we caught bass, bream, and one 10# cat emoSmile all while bream fishing.

I used to do last summer along the channel edge to locate some fish with my old boat. I could slow right down with it and not load up the plugs to bad. With my new boat I just cant slow down enough and it fouls the heck out of the plugs. DD22 and fat free shads. Its a good way to find some new structure and fish, and then come back and cast to certain spots. I found a brush pile that way when I snagged bottom and sent the lure retriever down and came up with some brush and my plug emoBigsmile I marked it on the GPS and I still stop frequently at the spot. cant do that anymore with my new boat, bummer

Not really Lance, I just dont think jumping in on a spot your clearly fishing is very friendly. They were just ticked I was trolling and catching good fish while they wanted in on the ledge.

Trolling is also a good way to take two young people fishing and actually get them on some fish. It's a lot safer than letting them try to cast, Trolling the river channel edges with deep little N's, model A bombers, etc has been productive for me.

In hot weather, fast trolling is the ticket!
