After Bprice pulled an EricM (previously known as a swan dive) I got to thinking about the discussion here about auto PFD's and cold weather. I pulled the owner's manual on my new Mustang hydrostatic and checked what they had to say. They are very specific that when the temperature is BELOW FREEZING the PFD should be worn partially inflated (using the oral inflation tube) because the vest may not adequately inflate. There are no warnings about temperatures above freezing.
On the same subject, having back-up clothing and even an old bath towel tucked into a zip-loc bag is a tremendous idea. Getting back to the ramp when you're wet is a horrible experience. If nothing else, put your rainsuit on over your clothes - it will trap body heat and keep out the wind long enough for you to get back to safety.
One more thing, to save those cell phones (when you need them the most), drop them into a sandwich sized zip-loc. They're still easily accessible, and will stay dry when you don't.
Be careful out there! Good Fishing!

Great advice !

I'd like to add this too.

When operating in cold waters, below 60°F, you should
consider using a coat or jacket style PFD or a Type V Thermal Protective
PFD as they cover more of the body than the vest or belt style PFDs and will
retain more body heat.

Also try to push your man overboard button while you're flying through the air head first into the frigid water !!!
