Hey BB thats a great first deer.

Most people spend as long time trying to shoot a deer like that congrats!!!emoDance emoDance emoDance

Congrats Kim!! That is one fine deer not to mention your first!! I've hunted with Kathy many years and thinking back I think I put her on her first kill (two small bucks, unfortunately it was not near that quality) but indeed memorable. Congratulations and I know I sure did enjoy hearing the actual story unfold via cell phone!! I'm just glad she didn't know it was a 10, she might of snatched that 270 from you

...... NO she wouldn't of done that

.... I know she was proud and a great memory forever etched into your life. I know Kathy enjoyed being a part of the hunt and you getting your first deer!! This is another example of how the CFF has brought people together.

GREAT JOB.......hope your forehead is OK!!

You are absolutely correct about the CFF. If it weren't for this wonderful website, I never would have met Kim. We have known each other now for over 2 yrs and have fished several tx's together and now have a hunt under our belt..............with success in both fishing and hunting.

DHaun thank you again for providing such a great website.

Great story and an even better BUCK! Thanks for sharing the WHOLE story with us. My son and I were here to look at fish, but he wanted to see someone's "1st Deer". Then he was just beside himself.... "A girl! A GIRL shot a trophy buck like that?!?!?!?" So, we had a talk and told him that not all girls are "pinky's out" and what a great world it would be if all our "girls" would hunt and fish. I couldn't get him to agree.... Ah... he IS only 12!!!! emoCool I told him you gal's ROCK!

Beautiful Buck there BassBullet. That is a great deer no matter what. I would be proud to take him and I have killed dozens. One small bit of advice if you don't mind, next time get a rifle with less recoil or a scope you don't have to get so close too. Been there, done that, got the scar to prove it. OUCH!

She was using my .270 with a Leupold scope which offers more eye relief than most scopes. I told her the best thing she could do was get to a range or somewhere to practice shooting a high powered rifle. If I'm not mistaken I don't think she had ever shot one before but this may be incorrect. I worked with her the night before proping the gun up and looking through the scope. Fortunately it was a superficial cut nothing deep to leave any major scar..... Where do you guys go to practice and sight in rifles?

Ok Kathy that combo should be good to go. There is no substitute for range time. Practice holding the rifle tight and squeezing the trigger. I don't know about up around Chattanooga for rifles but I have a range at my house that ya'll are welcome to shoot at anytime you like. I just need to have a day or so notice so I can mow the weeds down in the shooting lane.emoBigsmile

That would be nice. I was a member last year at the chattanooga rifle club and they have about anything one could ever ask for but I let my membership run out like a dummy but may try and get back on in 08.

I agree anyones biggest opportunity to stop the scope marks and get confidence in anything is merely practice & practice more.
Shoot me a pm when you get a chance cause I love to shoot (rifles, mzldrs, etc).

sis you know better than to take all advice here...dont ever hold a rifle real tight it will kill your shot groups and i am sure thats what cheez means.......it was a pretty ten pt in the pasture this morning.....talk to you later.....you could put a rattle trap on the end of the rifle and she would probably do just fine..........amaybe she would feel more in tune

JT you have to hold it tight enough to keep from getting the scope scar. Two things cause the scope to hit you. Too short of an eye relief or not holding tight enough. Since Kathy's rifle has a Leupold it's not eye relief.

It’s probably been 30 years since I have shot a rifle, and never one with a scope. That was the first time I had shot at something that was alive. My experience shooting has been cans off a fence post. The 30/30 and the 44 magnum were more fun, but the 22 was a lot cheaper.

You did real good for not having shot in that length of time. There are guys that shoot with me from time to time that miss deer nearly every time they hunt.

Another good combo is a 25.06 with the same scope. Plenty of kill power (For deer) and yet very low recoil.
