Well needless to say it was a very tough day on the pond for most of us. From what I gathered at the weigh in most of the guys in the top 5 were sight fishing or atleast catching bedding fish whether they could see them or not. I pre-fished a couple of days last week and during practice I struggled to catch fish period. Wednesday I pre fished from 11:30a-6:00p and found a decent crankbait bite in the main lake but nothing more than small fish. I fished the river on Thursday with another competitor and friend Bill Payne and we couldn't get anything going and with things changing so much in just a few days it was clear that the fish were on bed. Friday Tony (Skeeterzx200) and I got out for a couple of hours before the pre-Tx meeting and only managed a few bites. I decided on Friday that I wasn't going up river, I felt like based on my Wednesday practice that I should be able catch a limit in the lake and maybe get LUCKY and get my kicker flippin sometime during the day.
On Tournament day I blasted off in the last flight and things started out VERY slow for me as I was running back pockets w/ a spinnerbait and flipping isolated stumps/cover along the way hoping to get a bedder while the light was still low. I was hoping to get lucky but it became obvious that it wasn't happening for me. Sometime around 9am almost 2 hours after blast off I didn't have a fish and I decided to start running deep sea-walls w/ a crankbait and a SLOW topwater and my day finally got going as I caught a 3 spotted bass a 3lb, 2.5lb, and a 14-incher all in 15 mins. From then on I scrambled along w/ all the other boats and ended up catching 10 keepers and fishing about 10 different baits throughout the day. I never fished so hard to catch 10lbs in my life LOL! I didn't lose any fish nor did I have a chance to catch a big fish during the tournament it was just one of those days. I ended up finishing 27th w/ 10.7lbs of spotted bass and checking almost $300 bucks.
Tony finished only 1 ounce shy if getting a check also so congrats to him on another good finish.
Don't make fun of my facial expression I had my sunglasses on for 4 days straight the sun was brighter without Costas than I remember LOL!
