Well needless to say it was a very tough day on the pond for most of us. From what I gathered at the weigh in most of the guys in the top 5 were sight fishing or atleast catching bedding fish whether they could see them or not. I pre-fished a couple of days last week and during practice I struggled to catch fish period. Wednesday I pre fished from 11:30a-6:00p and found a decent crankbait bite in the main lake but nothing more than small fish. I fished the river on Thursday with another competitor and friend Bill Payne and we couldn't get anything going and with things changing so much in just a few days it was clear that the fish were on bed. Friday Tony (Skeeterzx200) and I got out for a couple of hours before the pre-Tx meeting and only managed a few bites. I decided on Friday that I wasn't going up river, I felt like based on my Wednesday practice that I should be able catch a limit in the lake and maybe get LUCKY and get my kicker flippin sometime during the day.

On Tournament day I blasted off in the last flight and things started out VERY slow for me as I was running back pockets w/ a spinnerbait and flipping isolated stumps/cover along the way hoping to get a bedder while the light was still low. I was hoping to get lucky but it became obvious that it wasn't happening for me. Sometime around 9am almost 2 hours after blast off I didn't have a fish and I decided to start running deep sea-walls w/ a crankbait and a SLOW topwater and my day finally got going as I caught a 3 spotted bass a 3lb, 2.5lb, and a 14-incher all in 15 mins. From then on I scrambled along w/ all the other boats and ended up catching 10 keepers and fishing about 10 different baits throughout the day. I never fished so hard to catch 10lbs in my life LOL! I didn't lose any fish nor did I have a chance to catch a big fish during the tournament it was just one of those days. I ended up finishing 27th w/ 10.7lbs of spotted bass and checking almost $300 bucks.

Tony finished only 1 ounce shy if getting a check also so congrats to him on another good finish.

Don't make fun of my facial expression I had my sunglasses on for 4 days straight the sun was brighter without Costas than I remember LOL!

Congrats on a great finish out of 160 boats 27th isnt too sahbby and you got your gas money back from all the pre fishing!

When those fish are just getting up on their beds like that and you are site fishing what is your method of choice? Seems like it is really tough to site fish and is somthing that I would love to try. Do you fish the beds extremely slow in hopes they will pick it p and move it, or more agressive.

Well I don't sight fish so I have no idea LOL! My experience sight fishing is very limited, I don't like to do it nor do I try to do it, thats a big reason why I got whipped during this event LOL!

The only time I purposely fished around bedding fish was during the morning while the light was still low. I believed that the fish would be more agressive early and w/ the low light I could hopefully get them to hit a moving bait if it come by their bed. I chose small pockets w/ stumps and brush isolated from the bank thinking the fish would bed next to the cover.

LB...Congrats on your finish. It was the toughest tourney I've fished on Weiss. When Mark Pirkle, a qualifier for this year's All American, doesn't weigh-in a fish, it's gotta be tough. I guess I should be satisfied with my meager finish. Fishing upriver as we did, made for a long day.

Thanks Pointer. I was really disappointed when I got to the lake last week and seen what was going on. If this tournament would have been 2 weeks ago it would have been better for a lot of people including myself, but thats fishing.

It's tough in an event like that to just fish for 10-12lbs but after my bad start Saturday morning that quickly became my goal. Are you fishing the division or just the Weiss Tx?

All of them. Currently in 41st on the Co-Angler side. My meager catch Saturday dropped me 11 spots from 30th.

Good luck in the remaining Tx's, I wouldn't worry to much about the 11spot drop. Top 40 is all you have to worry about just put a fish or 2 in the boat through the last few events and you'll be there in the end. Atleast all the sight fishing crap should be over soon LOL!
