I am looking at trading my Avalanche for a diesel. I was looking at F-250's or Silverado 2500's, but my gawd you can buy a house for what people are asking for a used one.

Started browsing Ram's today. It looks like there are multiple options in motors. I would be interested in 04-07 models. Does anyone know any good/bad about these trucks in this range?

Cummins is the way to go. I would try to go 05 or later. I work with a guy who knows a lot about the cummins and he said try for a 05 or later they changed something on them for the 05 models.

GO WITH THE DODGE!!!!! FORDS are a time bomb waiting to explode....as egr coolers, etc.I have a F250 diesel. 2005. It gets 10mpg if it going to the BI-LO or pulling a 8000lb 5th wheel. Son had a 2004...........nothing but trouble.

Actually your good on the Dodges up thru 2006's. They added all the pollution crap in 2007.

I have had dodges from 1991 thru 2006...I would stick with the 24 valve without common rail fuel system.....I think they started using common rail system in 2003....I have a 2001 4x4 that gets around 19 with auto trans......

I have a Dodge gas burner so can't give personal input on the diesel but I have a friend that has an 06 2500 diesel and I've been around him since he bought it new, awesome truck! He put a Bully Dog programmer on it and pulls his enclosed race trailer with no problems. He has about 150K miles on it and other than normal maintenance he hasn't' done a thing to it.

I've driven a Chevy 6.5 diesel flatbed 3500 duelly with a allison 6sp 156k zero problems!

And imo fords ride like tractors

My Ford 6.7 is a pluasure to drive, fuel economy could be better but which could not be....It will do 20mpg or better just roadrunnin with or without air. Faster u drive, consumption of fuel increases. Pulling tandem trailer with 22' Ranger, 65-70 mph will get 13.5--15 mpg. Just depends on conditions & terrain. Pulls my 35' camper & still gets 12mpg, believe me , it will pull whatever u hook to rear, 400 hp & 800# torque.............. emoGeezer emoUSA

i know its not a 2500 series but on usa today news it says dodge will have a diesel engine in its 1500 series truck in the third quarter of this year, but on the the other hand i have a 04 ram 2500 and it pulls my nitro z8 and my tractor and 16 ft trailer without straining. no experience with chevy or ford

I have a 95 chev 1500 series with 6.5 diesel. Gets 20-22 solo and 16-18 pulling 20ft G3 or 7500 lb trailer. If they put a diesel in the 1500 series, that would be nice. I do know the newer Dodge engines are a lot quieter than the older engines. Got a wild hair and thought about trading until I saw the prices. Sticker shock.....

I got me a new duramax 2500 an they are great more power an better fuel mileage than any what year is your avalanche I may be interested?

The f150 with the 5.0 pulls awesome. I have an fx 4. I love being able to select the gears when I am climbing up signal mtn or driving down the mtn. Damnit. I just moved from Soddy. What was I thinking?

Appreciate the input guys, gives me something to think about.

I do have to laugh at you bass-boat pullers...you can pull those things with a Ford Fusion though!
Im pulling a monster pontoon, imagine pulling your tool shed with out wheels. LOL

I bet my bass boat weighs close to your pontoon.

You don't need no stinkin diesel, due the math the gas burner will come out ahead unless you pull 9,000 lb loads or more everday. Remeber maint. is substantially more $.

I hear ya, but I get 8 mile to the gallon pulling the toon, plus on hills its a joke.
And its not the weight, its the wind resistance. If yall havnt noticed, they are not streamlined like them rockets yall run. ;)

I have a 05 dodge 2500 it has 240k on it and only thing i have done is replace the frontend it did not need it but i changed it all when i hit 200k i owened a 03 ford f250 6.0 motor had the truck a month and blew the turbo egr cooler 2 injectors and a glow plugg ....ford is nightmare unless u get a 7.3 motor........chevy is good trucks for sure only problem dodge has is there transmission but by far the better motors

You are doing the right thing with the Diesel... Any of them newer than 04/05 are good choices I have had a 3500 Chevy Duramax with zero problems. I have a programmer to jack it up a bit and I assure you that a 21' CC Proline is nothing behind it. Fuel... I checked mine to Tampa Bay down I-75 pulling four thousand pounds and got better than 23 MPG and doing 70+ MPH average.
The pro hot shot haulers run the dodges with the six speed manual for dependability and economy. My Buddy Greg with the big Ford loved his truck as well. Take your pic... But for me it would be the ultra quiet Duramax first for everything, the Dodge for long hauling and the Ford only if I got a deal I could not pass up
