After seeing all the opions about Vanish line. I'd like some opions on braind line. I was using Spider Wird braid, and after using it I swore up and down that i'd neve use braid again. Then i tried some Stren supper braid, and the difference was like day and night, It really turned me off against trying any other Spider wire pridcuts.
?????? is, as far as braid line goes, what is your opion on what brands.

Wow... I love spider wire. Spinning or casting. I've used it for 10+ yrs and never had a challenge with it. Yes, it is different, and you have to make some accomadations for knot tying. But on moving water I have taken it all off my reels since moving here due to how it performs in current as opposed to mono. I'm having a hard transition to mono and have finally found that plain 'ol Trilene XL is working fine and dandy. Though I just went and checked, I use Spider wire fusion and not "braid" per sae. The challenge I had with some knots was that the sheathing on it that can degrade when you cinche your knot tight. But I've worked around it so I could pull Hawg's out of the grass on my jig....

For braid there's only one in my opinion ... PowerPro. I've heard good things about the Stren, but I love PowerPro too much to switch. I use it exclusively for pitching jigs and as my c-rig mainline. Tie it with a 7-wrap uni and when it begins to fade - and it will - slit the tip of a Marks-A-Lot marker and run the 20' or so of tag end back thru it to re-color it. The fading is no indication of weakness, it just happens when the fibers are exposed to sunlight. Braid will last for years too, so the end-result makes it cheaper. As you cut more away on your reel, just periodically add more mono backing underneath.

To touch on your flouro comments: don't write it off - rather, try some and form your own opinions ... just DON'T try Vanish or you really will be jaded to flouro. beetlespin has had excellent results w/ the Seaguar and that's one of the few I haven't tried, but he's not alone in the accolades of that particular brand. I'm sure the refractive qualities of flouro WILL get more bites, but - to me at least - it's just a hassle to fish with.

I have had problem's with spiderwire braid 30 lb but when i switched to 55 lb I have no problem's at all.I have been using it for a little over a year now.For frogin it is a must

I like Power pro, but I use Suffix now and love it. Never cared for spider wire at all, just didn't feel good to me. As far as Flouro goes, I have used P-line and like it a lot, but is very thick ( great for jigs in heavy cover), I now use Trilene and love every bit of it, it's just too freakin expensive to buy a lot of it.

I recently put some high-vis yellow 30lb PowerPro on my new stradic and think its great! Crankbaits dive deeper and the sensitivity is a lot better than mono from what I can tell. I just caught 2 nice stripers and my biggest bass of the year on it and could feel every detail of the fight. I also use about 2ft of 20lb floro shock leader to help with hooking the fish. One thing I recommend is to get those special little scissors from walmart to cut it with per the instructions on the box. Makes it a lot easier to work with.

i like both the power pro and the suffix. for me the suffix seems to work a little better on spinning tackle. both are super
sensitive and are smooth and long casting, neither bite down in the spool nearly as bad as spiderwire braid but
with a heavy enough lure and a hard enough cast any braid will bite down and make a nest for ya. with power pro and
suffix the few backlashes that i have had have been very minor and easy to pick out.

Like Rangerrob said, Powerpro is a solid choice and it was my choice until I tried Stren superbraid. These lines have evolved and to me the Stren is now the best followed by the Ugly Braid. Don't laugh, the ugly braid performs just like the stren but I like the dark color of stren better. Sufix is ok but not compared to the two I mentioned. Spiderwire is my last choice. I am actually trying some 15 pound powerpro for cranking deep right now. I can get the lure deeper with it but I feel like its harder for the fish to get the bait in their mouth with it. I got the rod knocked out of my hand several times tuesday but didn't hook the fish!

BS

I have been using the Suffix performance braid, and I love it! It seems to be more subtle and soft than the Spider wire. I use it around grass and on c-rigging main lines.

I have two reels spooled with UGLY BRAID. One for worms and the other for jigs. 20# and 30# respectfully. Would have never used this product if it was not highly recommended by a good friend...I really like it for this type of fishin. Many years ago I had some bad experiences with spider wire. Swore I would never use braid again..but I like the ugly braid pretty good...that's my .02 and it ain't that pricey.

Stren or Powerpro. I do have a few problems with it sometimes but the good far outweighs the bad. Theres a new one out that you can see real well and it shows up under a black light too. Cant remember the name of it though and I havnt tried it yet.

Are some of you guys using braid on your spinning tackle? Would 20 pound work well?

I use it for snook ,reds, and tarpon.Power Pro is what I have used most but have been going with Suffix lately. The typical reel for me is a 4000 series spinning reel.I have tried it on a 6500 c4 and had some serious backlash problems. The highland lakes I fish are clear and generally clear of obstructions, and deep so I am happy with 8 pound clear mono here on both my spinning and casting reels.Braids break at higher pound strength than they are rated. For instance,20 lb.line will actually test closer to 30.A slight nick will significantly weaken it.A backlash can cause braid to cut or nick itself. If you have to break off after getting hung, the line can be damaged further along than where it breaks .Zero stretch means greater sensitifity but also means you can rip the hooks out of a fish easier. If you have line that breaks at 40 or 50 pounds or more on a reel designed for about 10 pounds of pull and you crank down on the drag or pull very hard to break from a snag you can damage the reel.A knot within the lenght of the cast will definately cause problems. To end on a positive note,I will say that it casts further.

Another vote for Power Pro. Avoid using braid in very cold temps. I found out last February at Guntersville what a pain braid can be when the temp is in the low teens.

I have tried most of the braids and for years I liked Spiderwire. Then I tried Power Pro and switched over. Then Spiderwire came out with the Ultracast and I tried it. Ultracast is the best braid yet. Very soft, casts super easy and hardly buries if spooled on tightly. I haven't used anything but the 65# on one of my catfish rigs but I'm sold.

Okay, gotta comment again.... the spider wire is different, I agree. It's give or take. (I have not used Power pro or the other you all seem to like as well). If you can get an 8lb diameter with a 20lb test, that's what mostly sold me. I just HATE having a fish, be well hooked because I didn't yank it out of his mouth, then lose him because the line cannot handle the dead weight of grass or the 90 degree turn around a stick/dock. I was sold on these super lines the first time I horsed a 5lb bass through the steel dock frame that my worm skipped over and through. The smaller diameter also fishes really well on a Shimano Sierra that I have on a Med St croix. It is sensitive, but do I really care if there is "cushion" in my line? It's give or take isn't it??? Strenth or a few rats nests? I've had those occassionally from ALL lines on Shimano baitcasters for years... it's part of fishing. Also, the super lines seem to have smaller nests than mono but can crease which makes things interesting. You are all giving me hope there is something better!

Yeah N.A. there is, Power Pro. But I did use Rivermonjeffs frog rod this summer & he had Spider wire on it & it was ok. He had it on for about a year & it was realy broke in & it was 80Lb test I think too. So, if you have a year to break in some spider wire ( But I think it was the $35.00 a spool stuff maby it comes like that) try that, if not get you some $15.00 power Pro & be done with it. Cheez is that the new Spider wire you were talking about? The realy high stuff ($35.00) a spool, but last forever?

well at the risk of reviving the wd40 for everything thread i have used it to help the braid along. since we used to use it as an attractor on soft plastics when i lived in florida i dont think it would spook the fish away emoTongue

Yes Steve the Ultracast is the expensive stuff. I used it all summer on one of my cat rods and the last half of the summer on the other. I backed it with 40 pound P-line so a $35 spool filled 3 reels. Not too bad if you do it that way. It is nothing at all like the original Spiderwire other than it will wrap around the tip if you don't watch.
