I could use some help here. I cant talk about a current case I have in court on a termination but I am looking to broaden my knowledge about proper termination, hiring, employee evaluations, ect ect ect....

We have gone too long without proper things in place. My supervisors were never allowed to run thier departments like they should in the past. (previous plant managers failed in that area.) I'm looking for websites or books, documentations to educate everyone on successfully hiring or terminating an employee. On the flip side of that, I'm looking for some decent documents for myself and my supervisors to use for employee evaluations, disciple or anything that could us in record keeping.

Up until I took over, our attendance policy was just "winging it" no real structure. I implemented a point policy and low and behold...attendance is UP! Almost perfect!!!!!

So...its those kinds of things I'm looking for. If any of you have word documents that I could tweak or use to my advantage, I sure would appreciate it! If you have books you could loan or part with, let me know.

I'd also like to add that if you want to bug my ear on these subjects...Gimme a call! The # is in our CFF Emergency List or PM me.

I deal with it all the time Billy. At any given time I have about 60 working under me and the nuances of it can get painful. The biggest thing is a paper trail to back up your repremands. Document everything and get signatures for everything. Another thing that helps is having an HR department with some stones that will back you ... but that's usually just a fantasy, unfortunately.

You might think about temps. I never in a million years thought I would say that, but they do have their merits. First, if they don't work out - and 99% won't - just call the temp service and make them go away. I'll get my share of temps that are truely stellar performers and they end up sticking around, but for the ones that don't you can easily wash your hands of them.

I need to call you soon anyway, so we can discuss further if you'd like.

Just hire illegal immigrants and your unemployment compensation worries will vanish.Insurance benefits?Forget about it.Pay what ever you want to and and if you you feel like that is too much just don't pay them at all.You can tell them to take it or leave it.Better yet, just outsource your labor to a chinese company and your middle management and marketing staff to an indian company and you can just spend all of your time counting your money and griping about having to pay taxes on it.

Thanks Rob. I use a temp service now but I only have 2 of them. The rest are full time and on our clock. Thing is....its so slow in our market right now that i have to let 10-12 go this next week unless we get some serious orders. I staff 25 in house now.

I don't care what they say about you, your all right .You just took that as the joke it was and kept on trucking.A lot of people would have pitched a verbal tantrum and and let their blood pressure rise over it.Sorry you are having troubles.Ya'll need any help over there?

Hey Billy email my dad. He's a H.R. for Gateway Bank and at every H.R. Job or General Managers job he's had, he's used literature and some other ways to help all the managers under him. [email protected]
He would be glad to point you in the right direction.

Yup HH, its a amazing how some people get worked up over the little things! LOL

Billy, your doing the right thing asking for ideas.

The point system is the way to go on attendance and tardiness issues as well. They are the same problem to me. The comment about an HR person or dept is a great one, and if yall dont have one now, you might think about creating one from exsisting employes? Haveing "somthing" official is better when you have documentaion, or legal issues now-a-days. I have some other ideas on that if you want to call me for more.

It gets my blood boiling when I hear folks say, "they cant fire ME, I will take them to court!" Fire them with the right method, and it will hold up anywhere.

I sure feel for ya, and dont wish for a second I was back in supervision.....I like worring about #1 a whole lot better now.

The EEOC and other bleeding heart government organizations work hard trying to make it nearly impossible to fire someone. They do have rules and you can play their game to your advantage. It is just like dealing with a union. Use their handbook to beat them at their own game. You must do your homework though because they have lots of practice finding ways to keep jobs without actually working.

You've got the right idea. The hospital I worked for (in another city) had its structure in place and EVERYTHING was in writing so there was no guesswork when it came to the process of terminating an employee. 1.)Verbal warning, 2.) Written warning, 3.) Meeting with supervisor (& possible suspension) 4.) Termination

Often, the problem is getting the ADMINISTRATION to make clear rules and back up the MANAGER or SUPERVISOR who must enforce them. Management must then apply the rules uniformly to the entire staff.

Kinda like being a good parent...

Just my .02 cents.

Glad I don't work for none of you!emoSmile

Yeah, I'm awful to work for. I actually require my people to SHOW UP daily and WORK to get their paychecks. What's this world coming to?!? emoLaugh

This is why I work alone!I have bid on and won large commercial jobs over the years and have had to hire and run a crew to get the job done and it's just not worth it!Paperwork sucks,I can't get anything done because I have to keep an eye on everyone, and the quality of their work is usually questionable in spite of my attempts to correct them. Now I just take smaller jobs with smaller pay and try my best to keep my world and stress as small as I can emoSmile
I have worked under the points system before when I was a printer and it worked for the most part(I lived in fear of getting fired which I hated)but there where always those whom I worked with that found a way to get by with anything they could and still didn't get fired like they should have. Not sure if there is a better way,I guess you just have to have someone who is a very good judge of character in HR.Good luck.

I know what you mean Ranman. I too work construction, and have had some big contracts(Hooters, I did the trim package, and setup) I had 7 guys working, and it was a full time job keeping them on track. Sometimes you just have to delegate responsibilities. I am now down to me and two others, a whole lot easier to deal with.

As Rob said, document everything....this is most important

I'm not trying to be funny foodsaver but I used to think it would be kinda nice to sit around for awhile and let my wife's biz support us, until my work slowed down and I HAD to sit around and let it support us!Work isn't work if you love what you do(and I do)and when it's not there it starts to play on your mind.I don't think I could ever fully retire when it comes time for it.
