I wonder if they would take us all on the tv show "The biggest loser", probably get paid to do it too, there are a bunch on there that are big enough to go bear hunting with a switch and they all lose weight and you finally have a winner in the men's and women's division.

Neat Link Polo. It says I should weigh 231 pounds. That means I need to lose 51 pounds. Thats about what I thought I needed to lose. Its going to be tough but I'm going to try.

Beetlespin, if you read the info about the difference between the People's Choice Ideal weight and the Medically Reccomended weight you will find out why there is a big difference. The People's Choice weight is based on asking people the question "Ideally, how much would you like to weigh at the moment?". So, the People's Choice weight at the top of the page doesn't have a basis on medical info, only people's perceptions on what they think they what they would like to weigh. I think the reason that they have that calculation on the page is not to tell you what you should weigh but to show you what people think they should weigh in contrast to what they really should set thier mind on as being thier "ideal weight". There is a big difference between weighing 230lbs and having only 10% body fat, which might be a very healthy weight, and being 230 lbs and still having 30% body fat. When I think about losiing weight, yes, I want to look better but I think a better goal is to lose weight to try to be more healthy. It's the same as taking blood pressure or cholesterol medicine if I had high blood pressure or high cholesterol. If my blood pressure and cholesterol aren't in a range that decreases my risk of problems while on the medicine then the medicine is a waste of money and probably isn't helping anybody but the drug company.

If I were you I would aim for the 180's and 190's that are backed up by evidence that shows that you might live longer and better by reaching that weight and every pound closer to those numbers is better for you. Another big plus about loosing weight that most people don't think about is how the large amount of extra weight affects thier joints. Our joints just weren't made to last bearing huge amounts of weight and here in the US we wear out our joints long before we should. Joint replacements are helpful but nothing works as well as the way God made us to begin with.

When I look at the weight I should be at it looks like a long time before I get there but I really think that it is a worthwhile goal. All of us look to have a quick fix but it usually took a long time to get where we are and it will probably take a long time to get where we need to be.

after reading BS post you would think he was a fitness guru and weighed 180 not 380! Count me in. I bet between Bs and myself we could lose a person and still be fat!

Funny to think the day i got married i was 180! Is there a link there?

I'll be glad to join a pool, although I'm not saying "weight loss" is my primary goal.

I am however, "resolving" to hit the treadmill at least three times a week in 2009.

There... I have written it down in public. I guess I have to do it huh? emoDoh

Im in. I lost 30 lbs two years ago but have gained about 15 of it back. Polo, I guess we need to try and fit those bike rides back into our schedules now.

I think that exercise will shed those pounds off easier than anything else. Never dieted a day in my life, but When I used to work at Shaw, hated my job, drank beer (Bud) everyday, and never did anything physical, I weighed 205. After working on a house for about 6 months i was back at 180 and have never changed since then. ALso I think it is very very important to eat in the morning and eat a lot. YOur body knows whether to burn food or save your energy by how much it takes in. If you eat big in the morning your body will burn more calories all day than if you skip breakfast. If you do not believe it, compare how warm you feel on a day when you eat breakfast vs. a day when you skip breakfast. Eat a big breakfast and you can almost wear short sleeves on days of cold wind. More power to all you LOSERS. lol. Just kidding I love you all, your not losers. This really requires a lifestyle change. Congrats in advance.

I'm in I'm in the same boat I got down to 170 from 240 and got married now 9 months later 210. I'm in I do excercise and try to eat only 2000 calories a day of "good" food, which for me is tuna, greenebeans, and almonds

I'm in. I don't weight a whole lot, but in percentage, weight a good bit more than my college days. My goal is to lose 10 pounds and be at 140 by the end of Feb. It does't seem like much, but most of it is around my waist and I would like to add some muscle so that adds weight on it own.

One thing that I found really helped as a wrestler cutting weight was to drink LOTS of water. I mean to the point of feeling like its too much. Cut out the caffeine and sweetened drinks. When you do this, the water will flush an amazing amount of salts out of your body which retain water weight. Try to start on a goal of 1/2 gal per day and build to 1 gal. It sounds crazy because water weighs so much, but once your body is flushed, it will not keep the water stored. The biggest downside is that you will obviously pee like crazy. But you will feel much better.

There are some studies that have shown that as much as 80% percent of people who feel fatigued during the day is due to dehydration. Every time you drink a soda, it actually dehydrates you and you have to drink twice as much water to replce it. Unfortunately beer has the same detrimental effect..

Good Luck to All of Us!!!!

Richard, that's a great goal. Last I heard the American Heart Association reccomends that each of us exercise for at least 30 to 40 minutes 3 to 4 times per week and keep your heart rate between 60 and 80 percent of your calculated maximum. To calculate that range you take your age and subtract it from 220 and that is the calculated maximum. If we use say age 50(I'm almost there) that's 220 minus 50 equals 170. Then we calculate 0.8 and 0.6 of that number(80% and 60%) and get 136 and 102. So, for someone who is 50 years old they should try to exercise for at least 30 to 40 minutes 3 to 4 times per week keeping thier heart rate between 136 and 102. That will burn calories and keep one's heart in better shape. Before starting an exercise program be sure that you are fit enough to do it. If you need to see your doctor first, do it.

First off, no special diet is needed to lose weight but determination is. All you have to do is work off more calories than you take in. 2nd, you don't have to stop eating the foods you love, just limit how much. Push yourself away from the table when your're no longer hungry. Not when you're stuffed. Drink water. It hydrolyzes fat. Believe it or not, wintertime is the best time to lose weight. Why? Well.... the main reason your body burns calories is to maintain body heat. The colder the environment, the higher your metabolism will be to maintain that body heat. People who live in the coldest climates must increase their caloric intake. Those that live in and around the Arctic Circle must consume twice the calories of the average person or they will eventually starve to death. Start a walking program now while it's chilly. There's plenty of walking tracks in the area, but walking a track isn't really needed. Walk in your neighborhood. Forget the treadmill. You'll come to hate it. Get someone to walk with you. Having a walking buddy makes the time pass quicker. I'd advise those 40 and older to consult with a doctor before starting. Shoot, go see Polo-Dog. He's one of the best physicians around and you might be able to get a few fishing spots out of him. If you don't want to constantly monitor your heart rate, a good measuring stick is to walk fast enough to raise your heart rate but not fast enough to where you cannot carry on a conversation due to shortness of breath. Remember too, it's not how far you walk but how long you walk. 30-40 minutes a day will do the trick. Wear gloves while walking in the cold. Swinging your arms will create a wind chill factor and your hands will get cold fast.
One last thing, larger muscles burn substantially more calories . Consider a weight training program.

Hey Pointer, thanks for the plug. I'll pay you later.

All great suggestions too. I do enjoy seeing folks in the office that I have fishing in common with that's for sure.
