Washington closes all recreational fishing until April 8

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced on March 25 that all recreational fishing in the state will be closed under Governor Jay Inslee's orders that all residents stay at home to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

“This is not a decision we take lightly, but it’s the right thing to do for the health and well-being of Washington’s families,” said WDFW Director Kelly Susewind. “Monday’s extraordinary order for the residents of our state to stay home requires all of us to work together to ensure these measures have the intended effect.”


This closure of recreational fishing is expected to last until April 8, but WDFW also stated it will reassess the situation on April 6 to decide whether that deadline will need to be extended. Opening day for trout is still scheduled for April 25, but is also subject to change. The agency has also closed beaches to razor clam digs to prevent people from congregating.

The new closure comes as all state-managed parks, wildlife areas and water access areas have closed in an effort to stop the outbreak after public lands saw a surge of activity that put people in close proximity with one another.

"We’ve seen an uptick in outdoor recreation at some locations in recent weeks as people have looked for ways to get outside," said WDFW Fish Program Director Kelly Cunningham. "We’ve had reports of crowded boat ramps and busy fishing on some rivers, which runs counter to the governor’s direction to stay home and practice social distancing."

WDFW stated that officers will remain on duty to enforce these new rules.

4008 confirmed cases and 108 deaths. One of the first areas to get hit. Lots of urban fishing too. Lots of closure areas that would be hard to enforce with limited staff coming in the near weeks (thinking spring King salmon).

The thing that concerns me is the fact that many people are still in business as usual mode. The grandkids that live with me are out of school just like everyone else kids. They are going stir crazy. Last Thursday was my day off for the week. So, I decided to take them to Grasshopper to try and fish for a little while. I figure we won't be around anyone and some fresh air will do them good. We get to the boat ramp at around 9:15. There was nowhere to park. The lot was full and I had to park up on the hill past the gate to the campground. The creek looked like it was a Saturday. There had to be more boats than fish. We decided to leave around 1:00 pm. As I was walking through the parking lot, on the way to my truck, I notice an out of state tag. It was from Ohio. So, I start to pay attention to the tags. There were 3 tags from Ohio, 1 tag from Illinois, 2 tags from Kentucky, 1 from Georgia and 1 from Alabama. I know some of those states Governors have ordered people to stay at home. Instead, they come here. I just don't get it. We don't have near the cases some states have but we will soon if people don't stop treating this like Spring break.
