I am looking at pulling the trigger on a new boat. Yea, those of you who know me well, pick yourself up off the floor and tell me what you think. emoBigsmile I am a Ranger lover. I know they are not the fastest but I like the way they ride, handle and fish. After looking at them for a while now I am considering a Z119c. Beetlespin has one and his is very nice. emoThumbsup I am looking at a Mercury Pro XS Optimax 225 to power it. I am looking for imput both pro and con on any experience anyone may have had on this motor and/or boat. Here is the one I am considering. emoScratch Jmax

Re: Considering a new boat, what do you think?

Is that the one from Anglers? Sharp looking boat. I have had my pro xs for a year now, and its been great. Last year around this time you were able to add two years of warranty for a pretty good price.

Re: Considering a new boat, what do you think?

Can't comment on the Ranger. I do run that power plant on a 2013 Triton 19XS, which is a similar size and weight of that Ranger, I think. Will say I'm a big fan of the Pro XS. The Pro XS makes great power and is good on gas and oil. Mercury supports their products VERY well, IMO. Read up on the "care and feeding" of the Optimax, if you haven't already. The Merc boards on Bass Boat Central have some great info. I do run the Quicklean/Quickare additives and keep the service up as recommend. It pushes my 19XS to ~72 MPH on GPS. That rig looks like a nice upgrade for you. Hope it works out.

I am looking to order it from Fish-N-Fun. I would rather order it locally if the price is the same or better, after all they do support our local anglers well. They also sponsor the CBA. This is a package for 2014 and it has a couple upgrades that are in that picture I would also want. This one comes with a five year warranty.

Re: Considering a new boat, what do you think?

Ranger is a great boat and the guys at Fish n' Fun know their stuff, no doubt.

I will say though that I recently left Ranger and went to the new Phoenix 920, which is beamy like the Z series Rangers but as fast as any other on the market. I've hit high 70's in the Phoenix and it was extremely controllable at that. Plus you get way more bang for your buck with Phoenix, far more storage, and better built. Stainless steel latches all the way around and a composite material instead of wood material under the lids, never ever rot. Plus Phoenix us made right here in TN about an hour away and bend over backwards for their customers.

I had in a 6 footers on Erie and never speared a single wave, they stay on top of the water not eat it like a............

Either way, you're looking at a damn nice rig and take it from me, make sure it has the black engine on the back!

Enjoy your new rig.

Wow Jmax I am surprised. Very pretty boat and it definitely has the right motor. Pull that trigger and enjoy it!

JMax I have a New Ranger for a Deal. A 225 is to fast for you I never see you running more than 45mph anyway!

emoUpsmile Yea, that is about right. Plus with Derek as my main partner, that is like having only one and a half people in the boat, will be better on the lift and speed. emoBigsmile Jmax

Re: Considering a new boat, what do you think?

All the advice you got minus the ribbing is pretty well on target so far. The Pic shows a sportmaster lower unit and I`m not sure it would be really needed on a Ranger. My understanding is that you need to get a lot of the lower unit out of the water to really take advantage of the Sporty` design. Not saying that it wouldn`t do it on a Ranger but..... The standard Torque master that came on my 225 XS is rated for 86MPH. I`d definitely talk to Paul Nichols about that before I chose the lower unit and would also ask him about a standard Opti vs. the XS in your particular set-up. Maybe that a 250 Opti would be a lower priced and more appropriate set-up on the Ranger than the hi-strung XS. The Sporty`s are really snazzy looking but I think unless you are running in some higher MPH range they can actually be detrimental to your setup.
I`d definitely call Paul before choosing. Just my Thoughts

Jmax, u need to clean up with new hat & tie with a rig like that. Know I like my Ranger, bad hip, bad back & old age makes it the better ride, 45 mph or 65 mph......luck.............. emoGeezer emoUSA

Re: Considering a new boat, what do you think?

That much red on the interior would make me hyper, but I love the red and gray combination. Can't go wrong with Ranger (resale value) and Mercury (dependable). Pull the trigger on it. Life is short, and the Chick is on fire!
