What is a coot? Some type of bird? I've been seeing people talk about them but I dont know what they are

I was wondering what was up with the grass. Last weekend we went up river from Dayton and there wasn't any grass on the main river next to the banks. I actually like it better when it's gone.

I like up until the river starts going down for winter. Then to me it's overwhelming. Its hard for me to set on a matter and pick it apart all day with a frog. Just to watch fish blow up short over and over. Alot of people seem to live and die by it but it's just not my style. At the end of summer when it takes over it usually only fish up the Hiawassee where there isn't any grass at all

Look for smaller isolated grass patches or mats . I love the smaller mats because it concentrates the fish . Not nearly as overwhelming .

I'm pretty sure these are what I was seeing near grass all day Saturday. Do they go under and stay under for a while the pop up 30 foot from where you seen them last

No , those are little brown diving birds . They will tell you where the bait is . Coots are solid black . Little bit smaller than a duck and are always with buddies .

They tend to run on top of the water when attempting to take off. A bigcover of them can create a ruckus.

They can be quite mean to their chicks. If there's not enough food for the hatchlings, they will kill many of them off.

The little brown birds are "grebes". as stated above the solid black ones that raft up in 100's are coots. And there will be only more and more showing up in the coming weeks

Do they kill the mats or just eat that much of it? I see a lot of them on Nick.

Fun fact: A coot's neck will snap like a twig if the bird freaks out at your cast and flies directly into the hull of a docked boat emoGeezer.
