I read where an individual caught a 14.53 lb. largemouth yesterday (per Fish Dayton Facebook page). Huge fish. I feel it is just a matter of time and it’s going to happen soon that the current state record will be topped. This could be a vicious cycle over the next couple of years. What are your thoughts? Will it be you?

With the amount of baitfish in the lake, and the size of some of the schools of gizzard shad, its entirely possible there are some 17-18 pounders cruising around.

I think the odds would be better this year . With the extreme cold so far this year , we may actually have a real Shad kill . After that and the fish start eating again , there will be some giants caught .

Seeing as I can barely get a bite I doubt it will be me LOL. Wouldn’t surprise me at all to see a 16 lbder soon

Yeah I'm with you on this...it want be me either. However, it will be fun see, hearing and watching someone's story of the big catch.

On any given day on any lake noted for big Bass 1 cast could make a new record happen at any given time or day. I new a guy back years ago that was crappie fishing caught the record bass on Lake Fork on an ultralite Crappie rig and took him almost an hour to put the fish in the boat. So it can happen when you least expect it to so would not surprise me that one is lurking in the waters on the Chick.............JMHO

I think it may very well happen in 2018 with the size of some being caught right now. Like several has said it won't be me and if it was I would be the one laying in the bottom of the boat with the fish. I had one in the 10 plus range on 8lb test a couple of years ago. I liked to have croaked then. I can't even imagine a 16-17 pounder!!!

Well, back when Old Hickory lake was in it's prime I was able to put 4 in the 13 lb range in the boat. We are talking back in late 80's early 90's. All of them came in the Spring when the big ladies were loaded down with eggs and staging to move up on the beds. All came in Shallow water. 5 foot or less. 1 came on Spinner Bait, 1 on a SSR7 Shad Rap and 2 on Jig-n-Craw combo. Never took any in tournament but always practicing for one so they got weighed and released gently back into the lake. After the fish kill in 96 by guy hired to erradicate the milfoil on the lake used the wrong poison and killed as many fish as he did weeds. The lake has struggled to get back even close to the lake it was with the milfoil. I don't think I have heard of many or for that fact any in the 10 lb range fish being caught and weighed in. If any lake produces a state record it will probably be The Chick!!!

Softbaitmaker, you probably got border property for sale in Texas.... (wopper of a story) Happy New Year !!!!

Nope , no property for sale in Texas. Back then I was on the water 5+ days a week and Old Hickory Lake back then would have given Guntersville a run for it's money with both weeds and big fish back then.

I've never heard any stories of the like of Old Hickory. Interesting. Maybe it will return to form one day soon. How has the vegetation on the lake been in the last couple of years?

Small patches of milfoil show up in a few of the creeks but it doesn't last. I'm not sure if they are still killing it or it just can't get a good root system. I do know that if you own a boat house or dock on the lake and weeds or milfoil tries to begin growing around it you can go to the Corps and get a permit and buy the poison from them to kill any weeds around your boat dock. They also tell you which day you can use the poison which just so happen they are the same days they will be generating and pulling the water which in turn pulls the poison all over the creeks and main channel during that time and that could be why the small patches of it that do get started die back off also. I don't figure Old Hickory Lake will ever be back like it was in my lifetime or my grandsons lifetime.

1978 and a trip to Lake Jackson in Tallahassee Fl yielded my 10.02. 2015 in Dallas Bay my Florida fish bowed his crown to a 12 lb sweetheart. Long distance travel is no longer needed to find Big Fish.
