Things I learned while taking a 4-year-old to his first fishing tourney:
- Brings lots of food.
- Be prepared to answer the question, "Can we go swimming" roughly every three minutes.
- Kids love prizes. He's still beaming over that bright red Zebco 202.
- If the tourney is the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, be ready to take him back the following Sunday and Monday (We did and had a perfect long weekend).
- Never, ever tell your father-in-law where your catching all those fat bream all Spring and give him a pack of the grubs they're hitting (Crappie Magnet, just about anything with chartreuse on it). Because sure enough, he'll pick tourney day as the one day of the year to get out his bass boat and have them all soremouthed before you get there in the pontoon.
Seriously Jason and everyone involved, thanks for a great day on the lake and making us new folks feel welcome. Mom, Dad, my son Drew and I started out fishing up near the dam in shallow water. Caught a few nice ones there - never got into any shellcrackers - then headed to our spot up at Ware Branch. Struck out there (see father-in-law comment), but we found a few more not too far away from our original spot. We had no luck with crickets. We were all using those Crappie Magnet grubs, Mom and Dad had there's rigged with a sinker about a foot under the jig.
We never got into them thick, but boated a few nice fat ones. My sister and her daughter joined us later, but didn't fish. I feel sorry for the teachers at my son's daycare today. They're going to get an earful about Drew's fishing tournament and his new "big boy rod." Thanks again.
