It's real hit or miss. Don't know if you saw an earlier post but one friend caught 22 SLABS out there about a week-and-a-half back. He thinks the dramatic rise in water has messed them up. I think he may be right... but those crappie out there in the Bay have always been real hit or miss for me. For the record, I caught the first crappie of my life out there... I'm guessing in 1966? A friend's Dad took us out... I think during March or April. Heavy wind... his technique was to simply drift across the bay... white maribou jigs tipped with minnows. Forty years ago and I still remember the day well. What's that tell ya? (besides the fact that I'm old emoBigsmile )

You aren't that old, I saw you a couple of weeks ago and you just looked well seasoned. I need to tie up some itsy bitsy marabou jigs one of these days. They really "breath" when you put them in the water.

I'm with you on that Shakespear gig, RS. They always start off smoother than snot, and then give up the ghost in a big way just when you need them most. Think it's bad gears? Or maybe just made from inferior metal? Don't know, but I've moved on also.

ps - I've seen guys in jail look more cheerfull than those two, you would think their in-laws were in town or something! emoSmile

Hey Richard, Have you considered the Okuma linecounter reels as a replacement? I have 2 of them. The larger one is a MA30DX and the smaller one is a MA20DX. Our very own Cory out at sportsmans warehouse helped me out on any questions I had. I like them so far but it would take me years to put the use on a reel that you do in a season of guide trips. Just my .02 . I have been using Okuma spinning reels for about 4 years now and they are a really great product. ----STEVE

I can't remember for sure, but I think I looked at them. If they are the ones I'm thinking about, I was a little turned off by their size and bulk. Me (and clients) are often drift fishing, actually holding rods & reels rather than setting them in a rod holder. It can get very tiresome and a big, heavy reel can make it worse. But again, I'm not sure if the Okuma is the one I actually looked at or not. I'll make a point of checking them out. Thanks.
